A much more subdued and open aesthetic as opposed to Burton C. Bell and John Bechdel's work in former groups such as Fear Factory, Killing Joke, Prong, and Ministry, Ascension of the Watchers began to explore the more acoustic and atmospheric sides of music in early 2002. Needing a break from the frenetic pace of Los Angeles, the aforementioned duo retired to rural Pennsylvania to sculpt their initial work.
