Biography

Robert Rowe and Sean Rowley formed the dance-pop group Cause & Effect in California in 1990. Combining Rowe's vocals and guitars with the keyboards and synthesizers of Rowley, the duo released a self-titled full-length in 1991 on the independent Exile label. The album caught the attention of Zoo Records, which signed the band and released a slightly different version of the album as Another Minute. Two singles reached the charts in 1992: "You Think You Know Her" hit number 38, while "Another Minute" made it to number 75. Adding drummer Richard Shepherd, the duo headed out for a tour in late 1992. Just before one show, however, Rowley passed away from a heart attack due to his asthma. All remaining shows were canceled, but Rowe and Shepherd resumed Cause & Effect one year later with longtime friend Keith Milo. The trio worked with producer Martyn Phillips and released Trip in 1994. A single from the album, "It's Over Now (It's Alright)," reached number 67 on the charts in August of that year. Both Keith Milo and Richard Shepherd have worked as producers, Milo with Dania Morales of Anything Box and Shepherd with Sacramento band the Adored. Innermost Station, Cause & Effect's long-awaited sequel to Trip, was released in the summer of 1999. ~ John Bush
