Kat Dahlia is the musical stage name of singer and songwriter Katriana Huguet. Dahlia was born in Miami Beach, Florida in 1991. Her parents were Cuban-Americans. She began writing songs at the age of 15. For musical backing she ripped from songs on YouTube. She left Miami for New York at 18 with her savings from a waitressing job. After living and working in N.Y.C., she issued an EP and music video that grabbed the attention of former Universal Motown boss Sylvia Rhone. Suitably impressed, she signed Dahlia to her Epic Records imprint, Vested in Culture, claiming she was a talented, ambitious, hard-to-pin cross between Nelly Furtado, Santigold, and Gwen Stefani. Dahlia's autobiographical first single, "Gangsta," is the subject of a video by director Samantha Lecca. Upon release it garnered substantial notice at YouTube, Vevo, MTV, and numerous hip-hop and urban music websites. The track was released as the A-side of a three-song EP on March 5, 2013 by VIC. On March 21, rapper Futuristic released his remix of the cut. ~ Thom JurekPortions of Content Provided by Rovi Corporation.
