For whatever reason -- bad luck or lack of that one small break -- there are so many talented working musicians who never make it into the public eye because they never find the right situation in which to play their music. It looked for much of his musical career like Minnesota native Keith Methven might be one of those musicians. Methven started playing professionally in a Top 40 rock band out of Duluth, MN, whose third gig was opening for Three Dog Night in front of 5,000 people. After a couple years that band fizzled, and Methven set out for Boston, where he enrolled in the Berklee College of Music in 1972. Out of money, he returned to Minnesota in 1974 and began to teach privately while playing jazz gigs around Duluth. The next few years found Methven moving from Minneapolis and back to Duluth to play in various funk and R&B bands that never amounted to much. Still, he was constantly improving his playing skills, and by this time, was proficient on guitar and keyboards. Methven moved to Los Angeles in 1981, playing in several showcase bands (including one who cut a record) before heading to San Diego in 1991. In San Diego, Methven's persistence finally began paying off in, of all things, country & western music. He joined the Durango Band, the backup band for country singer Char Carroll, in 1993 as a guitarist/keyboardist and arranger. He stayed with the band for a year and a half, during which they toured Japan for the U.S. Department of Defense and opened for Merle Haggard. Methven quit Durango in 1994 to concentrate on his own music. He composed background, theme, and character-enhancement music for various projects. He joined another country band, Sidewinder, in 1995. They won several local San Diego honors, and Methven was elected Guitar Player of the Year by the San Diego County chapter of the California Country Music Association. In 1998, having certainly paid his dues, Methven released a CD of his own atmospheric compositions, Check This Out, which reflects his eclectic musical past. ~ Stanton SwihartPortions of Content Provided by Rovi Corporation.
