A master of the Baroque repertoire, this bass/baritone vocalist has performed with opera companies around the globe. Making his debut in the early '90s in the title role of the New York City Opera's Le Nozze Di Figaro, Dean was described by the New York Times as "hearty, yet light on his feet." The lengthy list of companies with whom Dean has performed include the Landestheater in Linz, Austria; the Komische Opera in Berlin, Germany; the Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg, France; the Mark Morris Dance Company; the Houston Symphony Orchestra; the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; the Opera Company of Philadelphia; and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has made many appearances at the Gottingen Handel Festival in Germany, several of which have been recorded by the Harmonic Mundi label. Born in San Diego, Dean studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory, and University of California in Santa Barbara and privately with vocal coach Marlena Malas. He served a two-year apprenticeship with the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco. Dean has appeared in many shows in New York, including Of Mice and Men, Die Zauberflote, Il Viaggio a Reims, and Lizzie Borden, which was featured on the PBS telecast Live From Lincoln Center. Under the auspices of EOS Music, Inc., he appeared in six one-act operas presented in New York. In an attempt to master the languages of opera, Dean studied advanced Italian at the Instituto Per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy, and advanced German at Hochschule in Linz, Austria. Dean is married to soprano vocalist Maria Fortuna. ~ Craig HarrisPortions of Content Provided by Rovi Corporation.
