African-born Wendy Gelsanliter grew up on the move, following her father (a Foreign Service officer) from city to city throughout her early years. She knew that she wanted a job in the music industry, and started singing in bands and choirs as she got older. After graduating in 1986, she moved to New York City and set up shop as a teacher and folk musician in the area.
