Fell is spearheaded by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Josh Wambecke, who had been part of the duo Phineas Gage. The group was formed when Wambecke built up a pile of four-track demo tapes that were considered unsuitable for Phineas Gage because of their use of electronics and drum machines. Fell's self-titled 2006 debut sought to combine the feel of those demos with the guitars and vocals that were more characteristic of Phineas Gage, with Wambecke accompanied by bass/slide guitarist Mike Dewey and drummer Josh Cedillo.
