Jocelyn Menard was born in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada, in 1961. In 1980, he completed the jazz studies program at Concordia University. In 1988, he accepted a position in the French department of Guadeloupe, teaching saxophone and flute at the center musical Robert Mavounzy. In 1987, he began traveling to New York on a regular basis in order to study with George Coleman and also traveled to Paris to study harmony with Bernard Maury.
