Alternative CCM quartet Mayfair Laundry emerged in the late 1990s with a sound rooted in the punk and ska revivals of the era. Formed in Los Angeles in 1996 by longtime friends and musical collaborators Frank Sandoval (guitar), Paul Dexter (bass), and David Snow (drums), the band grew to a quartet with the arrival of vocalist Shannon Woolner. Mayfair Laundry issued its debut album, Scrub, in 1998. Woolner left the fold the following year and was replaced by Kim Dexter, who made her studio debut on 1999's New and Improved.
