The drummer and background singer for popular Portuguese band the Sheiks in the mid-'60s, Paulo de Carvalho found fame after stepping into the limelight as a soloist. Leaving the Sheiks in 1968, de Carvalho went on to win the Festival RTP of Song in 1974 and 1976. Infused by North American R&B, funk, and African music, he created some of the most exciting dance music to emanate from Portugal in the 1970s.
