Here's The Real Reason Sam Smith Almost Quit The Industry
September 14, 2017
We might all be reveling in the beauty (or sadness) of Sam Smith's new single, "Too Good At Goodbyes," but the recording of the accompanying album was a hard task to complete. In fact, he almost considered quitting the industry altogether since he was in such a rough place after a breakup.
Speaking with Sir Elton John for UK gay magazine Attitude, the 25-year-old pop crooner said that his team had to force him to get back into the recording studio. "I almost felt as if I didn't want to do it anymore," Smith said in the October cover story, which features two special edition covers. "So, there were moments on there where it got a bit intense and I started to lose myself."
Later on in the interview, the pop legend asked Sam if he was scared he wouldn't be able to write again and the singer confessed that it was a very real fear of his. "Yeah. I was just too sad," he admitted. "Then I started drinking a lot, going out too much and just not looking after myself."
Elsewhere in the issue, Sheeran spoke about his competitive nature with Ed Sheeran and flubbing his acceptance speech for Best Original Song at last year's Oscars. Attitude's October issue is currently out now!
