The government is moving to regulate certain recreational drones. People operating the drones will soon have to register their unmanned aircraft with the Transportation Department. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the government must be agile and adaptable in a fast-changing world. The regulation is a response to increasing reports of close calls between drones and airplanes around some of the country's largest airports.
The FAA reports more than 650 unauthorized drone sightings near major airports this year. Foxx said a task force is being formed and he hopes the new regulations are in place before year's end. He noted that the government is also embarking on a public information campaign to alert drone operators about the dangers and penalties for unauthorized use. Foxx said the government does not intend to do anything to stifle the emerging unmanned aircraft industry.
