(NEWSER) – Mary Keitany of Kenya has won the women's title at the New York City Marathon, while Wilson Kipsang of Kenya has won the men's title giving him titles in Berlin, London, and New York in the past 13 months.
Keitany overtook countrywoman Jemima Sumgong with about a half-mile to go today in her first marathon since 2012 after the birth of her second child. Keitany won in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 25 minutes, 7 seconds—3 seconds ahead of Sumgong, which would match the closest finish in the history of the women's race. It was a redemption in New York for the 32-year-old Keitany, who raced out to a big lead in 2011 only to be passed and settle for third.
