(NEWSER) – Last week's poll putting Ben Carson at the head of the GOP pack was no fluke: An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll gives Carson the biggest lead yet among Republican primary voters, with 29% to Donald Trump's 23%.

The telephone poll of 400 voters, conducted before and after last week's GOP debate, put Marco Rubio third with 11% and Ted Cruz fourth with 10%, leaving Jeb Bush in fifth place with 8% and the others below 3%. Pollsters say that while it isn't clear whether Carson's popularity will endure, he's currently the most respected candidate running for president from either party and has a broad appeal for GOP voters, with 50% putting him as either their first or second choice.
