The lineup for the 2014 American Music Awards is burgeoning into a star-studded affair: British soul master Sam Smith, pop-punk band 5 Seconds Of Summer and R&B legend Mary J. Blige have just been tapped as performers. They join the previously announced Charli XCX for the live event, as Pitbull is set to return as the host.

Heading into the evening, 5SOS are up for New Artist Of The Year (Presented By Kohl’s). They face off against Iggy AzaleaBastille, Smith and Meghan Trainor for the title. The group shot into the mainstream following success in their native country of Australia and charted a collection of No. 1's here in the states, including their self-titled debut album, bolstered by such hits as “She’s So Pretty” and “Amnesia.”

For Smith, his success stems from his searing performances with such Hot 100 hits as “Stay With Me” and “I’m Not The Only One,” both cuts from his In The Lonely Hour debut project. He’s also up for Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock, a field which also includes John Legend and Pharrell Williams.

Sam Smith fans… it's true!

But leading the pack is Azalea, off the impressive “Fancy” collaboration with Charli XCX, and has landed a total of six nominations. Other top contenders include Katy Perry (five) and Lorde (four). The AMAs honor the best in a wide range of genres, from Pop/Rock and Country to Hip-Hop, Soul, R&B and Alternative Rock (and everything in between). The nominations were determined by several key interactions, as documented onBillboard.com and reported by Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound. Those are: album and digital single sales, radio airplay, streaming and social (online) activity.

Fans can continue voting for their favorite artists here or on Twitter by including the nominee’s name, category name and the #AMAs hashtag within each tweet.

More performers and presenters will be announced soon. The American Music Awards go live from LA’s Nokia Theatre on Sun. (Nov. 23) on ABC at 8/7c.
