Justin Bieber is revealing “hardships” inspired his mournful vocals on “Where Are U Now.”
As Gossip Cop reported, Bieber collaborated on the hit song with Diplo and Skrillex, who perform together as the duo Jack U. In a video feature for the New York Times, all three were interviewed separately about the process of creating the infectious song, and it’s explained how Bieber and producer Poo Bear initially just came up with the lyrics and melody. It was later sent to Diplo, and he and Skrillex added the track’s signature beat and vocal distortions.
“Now being 21, and going through some hardships, I think you can hear that in my vocals,” says Bieber. “You can hear that through the emotion of my voice.” Bieber also recorded the original stripped-down, ballad version of “Where Are U Now,” and there’s speculation it could be included on the superstar’s highly-anticipated next album.
Bieber promoted both the Times video and his new record on Twitter on Tuesday, tweeting, “I get so nervous in interviews lol. @Skrillex @diplo love u guys. This album is gonna be amazing!” As Gossip Cop has noted, Bieber is in the midst of a countdown for “What Do You Mean,” his first solo single in years, which will be released on Friday.
