Lady Gaga released the powerful music video for “Til It Happens To You” late Thursday (September 17).
As Gossip Cop previously reported, Gaga recorded the song for The Hunting Ground, a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. Earlier this year, the pop star teamed up with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to urge the passing of the so-called “Enough Is Enough” bill, which sets guidelines for how colleges should deal with on-campus assaults. Gaga, who was raped when she was 19, wrote an op-ed about the importance of taking a stand on this issue.
Now her video for “Til It Happens To You” paints the picture of the disturbing reality many face on college campuses every day. The clip begins with a warning: “The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally upsetting but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses.” The video goes on to show scenes of sexual assault, and what the aftermath is like for the victims. Nikki Reed stars as one of the victims, and the video was helmed by her Thirteen and Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke.
On the video’s YouTube page, it’s noted, “A portion of proceeds from the sale of the song will be donated to organizations helping survivors of sexual assault.” Gaga also tweeted, “@diane_warren & I made ‘Til It Happens To You’ for people all over the world who suffer from painful life experiences. #TheHuntingGround.” She added, “We hope u feel our love & solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film #TilItHappensToYou.”
