Malik’s solo single, which premiered on January 29, will take the top spot on the Billboard chart dated January 20, it was announced on Monday. Along with that huge accomplishment comes some other milestones. “Pillow Talk” is now only the 25th song ever to debut at number one.
More impressively, he’s the first performer from the U.K. to have his very first song start at number one. He’s also only the third Brit to have a single debut at number one here in the U.S., following Adele and Elton John. Of course, most people are going to fixate over this other factoid: One Direction, with and without Malik, has never had a track take the crown.
The closet the band has come is with “Best Song Ever,” which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013. One Direction, however, has scored four number one singles in the UK. As Gossip Cop reported on Friday, Malik’s “Pillow Talk” is also the current number one over there on the Top 40 singles chart.
Malik’s success here stateside pushed out Justin Bieber, whose “Love Yourself” dropped to number two after only a week in the top spot. The rising star hasn’t yet revealed what his second single will be, but his solo album, Mind Over Mine, will be released on March 25, exactly one year after he quit One Direction. Will that debut at number one, too? Stay tuned.
