Zayn Malik is hitting back at accusations that he stole the idea for his album cover for Mind of Mine.
On Wednesday’s “Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon unveiled the cover art for Malik’s upcoming debut solo album. The picture, see right and below, shows the British star as a child, albeit with his adult tattoos on his arm. The image immediately drew comparisons to the cover of Lil Wayne’s 2008 album, Tha Carter III.
Many on Twitter accused Malik of copying Wayne, and trying to project more of a rap image. On Thursday night, he denied both claims. “I’m not tryna be no rapper,” Malik tweeted. “My album is me a child. My ideas have been with me a long time.”

The singer went on, “Use your brain, appreciate art don’t discriminate what you don’t understand.” Malik then retweeted messages of support from fans who pointed out the album cover style has actually been done by multiple artists, not just Wayne. “Lil Wayne didn’t trademark using baby pictures as cover art fam. Zayn just following legends that’s it,” posted @southsidezain, who shared old covers from Drake, Nas, and the Notorious BIG.
@zaynhealy responded, “true. a lot of artists use it for their own reasons,” with Malik retweeting the message. Mind Of Mine will be released on March 25, exactly one year after he quit One Direction. The former member has said the record might contain some rapping, but as Gossip Cop previously reported last year, he’s in no way embarking on a full-fledged rap career.
