California, Alaska, and Hawaii Ranked as Worst Places to Retire

If you're on the road to retirement, a new study suggests you should avoid the exit to California, Hawaii, and Alaska.

According to the study by the Blacktower Financial Management Group, all fifty states were ranked on factors that included: crime, cost of living, the percentage of the population aged 60 and over,, average property prices and life expectancy.

California, Hawaii and Alaska were ranked as the top three worst places to retire, with Maryland and Louisiana rounding out the top five.

For those people who are looking for an easy retirement and stretch your dollars long into your golden years, the study says Iowa, Minnesota, and Vermont were ideal places to retire, with Wisconsin, Nebraska and Idaho also ranked in the top five places.

If crime is a concern, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire were rated as some of the safest spots to retire. However, if you're more worried about downsizing your cost of living, then Mississippi, Oklahoma and Arkansas are the places to spend your golden years. West Virginia also ranked as the top spot for the lowest housing prices in the nation.

While California and Hawaii were ranked as some of the worst places to retire, they did have one silver lining - both states were ranked at #2 and #1 for life expectancy in the nation.
