In 2007, Coin Locker Kid started as a Fayetteville hip-hop trio, influenced by Portishead and Madlib. The ringleader, a boundary-pushing rapper by the name of Devyn Smith, soon parted ways with vocalist Kat Reimers and bassist Dominique "Prinny" Ellis and started making a buzz for himself. He held onto the moniker Coin Locker Kid and ultimately befriended Australian producer Katalyst through MySpace.
