Growing up on the edge of Washington, D.C., Daniel Dyer enjoyed the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and the Who, but wasn't devoted to music. That changed at age 14 when an uncle gave him an electric guitar. In high school Dyer joined cover and punk bands, and his taste switched to the Cult's songwriting and Steve Vai's guitar playing.
