        Biography

Lemuel Jones is known for two field recordings he did for John Lomax at the state penitentiary in Richmond, VA, on May 31, 1936. Jones did unaccompanied vocal versions of a Depression-era protest song called "Po' Farmers (Poor Farmers)" and a blues entitled "Shake It, Mama," and also sang as part of a unison vocal group behind fellow inmate James Wilson on a call-and-response work song called "Can't You Line 'Em," which Lomax recorded the same day. ~ Steve Leggett
