Logic stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Monday, August 28, after delivering a moving performance at the 2017 MTV VMAs on Sunday of his powerful anthem “1-800-273-8555.”
The rapper relived the now-viral performance with OAWRS, sharing that he was beyond nervous before stepping out on the stage alongside Alessia Cara, Khalid, suicide attempt survivors and lifeline call workers.
“It was so crazy. It was really weird because I’d never done anything like [the VMAs] before … it was either like I’m going to mess it up or hopefully do a good job,” Logic, whose real name is Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, shared. “I was freaking out.”
After performing the song, Logic gave an empowering speech, telling the crowd at the awards show: “Thank you all for giving me a platform to talk about something that mainstream media doesn't want to talk about … I don't care [what you are] I’m here to fight for your equality … we must fight for equality of every man, woman and child.”
“I really rehearsed that speech,” Logic told OAWRS. “It came from my heart, but I really hoped and hoped that it would come out as I wanted it to.”
Logic added that he’s glad he didn’t break into the industry until now given what he’s able to do with his music.
“This is all I’ve ever wanted and … I’m glad it didn’t happen till now because I’m much more mature,” he shared. “It’s just so crazy I was able to say hello to the pop commercial mainstream world last night as myself. … When I pitched it to MTV, I wasn’t sure they were going to be OK with it … I was like, ‘Oh my God, it actually worked.’”
Logic took calls from fans, including one woman who lost her son to suicide.
“It’s a very real thing,” Logic said. “It’s amazing to know that me and my team have put together a body of work … to know that we put this out of a place of just wanting to help others.”
“The only selfish part of it,” he added, “is that I get to perform it.”
The talented artist — who also shared that he hired the woman singing vocals on the track while celebrating his honeymoon at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas — concluded his memorable night with his wife, Jessica.
“I had a glass of scotch and two slices of pizza and snuggled with my corgis and my wife,” Logic, who also took home a Moon Man for Best Fight Against the System, shared.
