RAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A judge has postponed the sentencing of a driver who caused a crash that killed a grandmother and seriously injured her 10-year-old grandson after receiving a letter that the defendant was involved in a previous crash that killed a child.

On Monday, the judge said the court received a letter over the weekend saying 41-year-old Cameron Burrows was involved in an earlier snowmobile crash in which a child died. The judge called it “truly significant information” and asked both the prosecutor and defense attorney to investigate the letter before Burrows’ sentencing proceeded.

The letter to the judge was written in support of Burrows by some family friends, defense attorney Damian Nunzio told 24 Hour News 8. Nunzio said the crash apparently happened decades ago, when his client was only 16 years old. Nunzio said it was ruled an accident and Burrows never criminally charged. Nunzio said the letter didn’t say who the young victim was or even where the crash happened, so the judge now wants both attorneys to look into it.
