LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville has filed a counter-suit against former coach Rick Pitino.

In the federal court filing, U of L denies being in breach of Pitino's contract and that he is not owed the nearly $40 million in unpaid salary he has previously claimed. U of L claims in the filing that Pitino had a "breach of duty" by not supervising his assistant coaches, causing the NCAA level one violations and the school's involvement in the FBI investigation. The counter claim filed by the school goes on to request a judge rule that Pitino owes U of L restitution for "any monies paid as damages for vacated games, championships, records and honors" should the NCAA ruling force any of those things to happen.

Pitino's lawyer Steve Pence responded to the filing with one word, calling it "petty."
