A 17-year-old who became a viral sensation after video of him smashing an egg on the head on a far-right Australian politician says he will donate most of the money being raised for him toward the victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks.
Will Connolly, was dubbed "Egg Boy" online after video of him cracking an egg over Australian Senator Fraser Anning's head went viral on Saturday. The egging came as Anning made comments blaming the victims of the shooting to News 7 Sydney. Footage of the incident showed Connolly waiting behind Anning as he was giving the interview to the news station, and then cracking the egg on the far-right politician's head. Anning can be seen turning, and striking the 17-year-old twice. The boy was then tackled to the ground by other men present.
Dozens of people praised the teenager's actions who quickly became known as "Egg Boy" online.
The scene prompted the creation of a GoFundMe page for Connolly so people could help raise money for his legal fees and more eggs. So far, more than 2,500 people have donated over $52,000 to the fundraising campaign. The person who created the page said Connolly got in touch with them and said "he is committed to sending a majority of the money to the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attacks."
Anning was criticized Friday for blaming Muslim immigration for the terror attack at two mosques in New Zealand that left 50 dead, and at least 20 seriously injured, including one statement that said, "Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?"
"The real cause of the bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place," Anning said in a statement.
