2019 Billboard Music Awards - Show

No one knew Kelly Clarkson had been suffering in silence at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.

The "Because of You" singer had to be flown to the hospital for an urgent operation hours after hosting the 2019 BBMAs at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Wednesday (May 1) for the second year in a row. Unbeknownst to many viewers that night, Clarkson had been suffering from an appendicitis all-week long, and the excruciating pain she endured in between hosting and performance duties that night prompted her to be flown back to Los Angeles to have her appendix removed.

Per the May Clinic, appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix that can cause the colon to fill with pus and form a "finger-shaped pouch" which can be painful to the lower right side of the abdomen.

The 37-year-old, who was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center first thing the morning after, confirmed in a post-op tweet that the operation was successful and that she's recovering well. "Not gonna lie.... I may or may not have broken down in tears after the show from pain BUT thanks 2 all the amazing people @ Cedars-Sinai I flew home directly after the event, nailed the surgery early this morning, & feeling awesome now!" the "Behind These Hazel Eyes" star wrote. "Bye bye appendix #TheShowMustGoOn."

And the show certainly did go on, as Clarkson delivered not one, but two stunning performances at the BBMAs including her new single "Broken & Beautiful" from her new animated musical comedy, UglyDolls, which opens in theaters today (May 3).

We're wishing Kelly a safe and speedy recovery!
