Native American Activists Celebrate Decision To Mark Columbus Day In LA County As Indigenous Peoples Day Starting 2019

Maine and Washington D.C. are celebrating their first-ever 'Indigenous Peoples' Day' on Monday, after voting this year to change from Columbus Day.

Maine voted on the change back in April, while D.C. officials scrambled last week to push through an emergency bill to make the change. Six other states including Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, South Dakota, and New Mexico had previously made the move away from Columbus Day, along with a number of other U.S. cities.
