Two Buffalo, New York police officers have been suspended without pay after a graphic video allegedly shows them shoving a 75-year-old protester.
The video was taken by radio station WBFO that shows the older man trying to speak to the officers, dressed in riot gear, when cops begin to yell at him to move back. One officer violently shoves him to the ground with his baton while another shoves him with his hands.
The man falls backward onto the sidewalk, and then you see him starting bleed. The officers didn't even offer to help the man, leaving him on the ground as they passed by.
The video, taken just after the 8 pm curfew in front of Buffalo's City Hall, immediately received backlash, with Twitter users tagging New York's Governor and Attorney General in the viral clip. Social media grew even angrier after the department released a statement saying the unidentified man "tripped and fell."
TRIPPED AND FELL!
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted that the actions of the officers "are wholly unjustified and utterly disgraceful.
Police officers must enforce - NOT ABUSE - the law."
Both Cuomo and Buffalo's mayor agreed that the two officers should be suspended without pay. The Buffalo PD said it is conducting an internal investigation while the older man is in a serious but stable condition.
If they do grandpa like this...YOU DONT HAVE A CHANCE. https://t.co/2M0VUx669I

Again, if they’re doing this to old white men ON camera, imagine what the fuck is happening off camera. https://t.co/aWM1sl8wRj

He’s 75. Unarmed. Yet he is pushed down by the police and none of them tried to fucking help him even as he was BLEEDING.

Buffalo PD said he “tripped and fell” and suspended the officers. This is bullshit.
DONT COVER SHIT UP AND FIRE THESE FUCKING MONSTERS https://t.co/QPXYTtpT4K
Presumably the police officers who watched their colleagues shove that elderly man to the ground and lay there immobilized & bleeding--14, if I counted correctly? -- are a random sample of the Buffalo force. which ones are the good guys and which are the bad apples...?

It looks like the elderly man who was assaulted and could have been killed by #Buffalo cops was trying to HELP THEM by returning a helmet, before they pushed him to the concrete, split his head open, and walked away. #BuffaloPD #BuffaloPolice #PoliceBrutality #PoliceViolence pic.twitter.com/3M5Li2bLFy

The police issued a statement shortly before the video began to circulate stating the man “tripped and fell,” implying it was an accident. They had already made a determination of the incident.
Buffalo PD was lying.
Mayor Brown is lying. https://t.co/ignCsosszb
Never forget that if we didn’t have cell phone video, the Buffalo police would have likely have gotten away saying the man tripped.
