Two employees with the New York City Parks Department are accused of using an American flag to mop a dirty bathroom in Coney Island. According to the New York Post, a veteran approached the employees and started yelling at them for disrespecting the flag.

"He was really angry," Jose Gonzalez, a Guardian Angel who witnessed the encounter, told the newspaper. The veteran yelled at the two men, telling them they "can't use the flag to wipe up urine and s*** from the floor."

The employees didn't seem to think that using the flag as a mop was a problem.

"The Parks guy didn't see what the big deal was and told him, 'It's just a symbol,'" Gonzalez said.

After the veteran stormed out of the bathroom, Gonzalez snapped a photograph of the American flag wrapped around the bottom of the mop.

"This is an absolute disgrace, especially one day before Flag Day, an honored day that no one is discussing in New York City," said Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. "Clearly, we are not educating our citizens. At a time when we are all divided, it's the flag that brings us together."

Officials with the Parks Department have not commented on the matter.
