Detroit baseball fans should know and appreciate the significance of October 14 to the team’s history.

And some longtime fans are already reflecting on the “iconic” moments.

Two legendary moments for the Detroit Tigers happened on this day, more than two decades apart. One was in 2006, and the other was in 1984.

More than three decades ago, Kirk Gibson famously hit a home run off of a pitch from San Diego Padres Pitcher Goose Gossage during game 5 of the 1984 World Series. Courtside Tweets noted that Gossage declined to walk Gibson, despite Manager Dick Williams’ advice, and “Sparky Anderson and the rest of the Tigers went crazy” over the home run.

Ultimately, the Tigers won that game 8-4 and won the World Series. That was the Tigers’ first World Series title in 16 years.

Fans can rewatch that moment in a one-minute, 21-second clip from Courtside Tweets.

Fourteen years ago, the Tigers had another historic moment against the Oakland Athletics when Magglio Ordonez hit a game-winning, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The hit launched the Tigers into the World Series, the MLB recounted on its video that captured the home run.
