The holiday season is in full swing, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. After a long year, Thanksgiving is a time where people can gather together with loved ones, have lively debates, and fill up on delicious seasonal food.

When it comes to deciding what to eat alongside the traditional turkey dinner, there are many sides to choose from. To help narrow down what to make, Zippia used Google trends from November 2019 to find the most popular Thanksgiving side dish for each state.

As it turns out, the most popular side in the country is mashed potatoes, which takes the top spot for 10 states, followed by macaroni and cheese, the number one for seven different states.

So what was the top side in Tennessee?

Sweet potato casserole!

Not to be confused with sweet potato pie, Tennessee joins Florida in craving this sweet, marshmallow-topped dish; however Mississippi also enjoys baked sweet potatoes.

Though sweet potato casserole may be the most popular, you don't have to stick with just one side this Thanksgiving. Take a cue from Texas' favorite, green bean casserole, Indiana's deviled eggs, or even Maine's side salad.

According to Zippia, people search for Thanksgiving sides the most on Thanksgiving Day, which could explain why you see so many people rushing to the store to pick up some last-minute ingredients. So this year, start planning ahead for your meal and enjoy the wonderfully glutinous holiday.
