A New England area high school hockey team gathered to support a teammate battling serious injuries as he was transferred to a specialized rehabilitation center in Atlanta Tuesday (February 16) morning.

A.J. Quetta, a senior at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, experienced spinal cord injury after crashing head-first into the boards during a game against Pope Francis in West Springfield on January 26, WCVB reports.

Quetta was transferred from Massachusetts General Hospital to Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta, which specializes in spinal cord and brain injuries, and is expected to spend at least three months recovering at the facility, according to a recent statement from his family obtained by WCVB.

"We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and prayers for our son," Anthony Quetta, Sr. said in the statement. "Words can't express our steadfast appreciation to all the donors during this time. This would not be possible without all the support we received."

Quetta's teammates showed their support by gathering outside Mass General in uniform and carrying their hockey sticks as an honor guard for the senior as he was wheeled out of the hospital.

The family's departure from the hospital was delayed, but teammates waited for hours until Quetta was taken to an ambulance, which then took him to a medical helicopter at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford to be flown to Atlanta.

Shepherd Rehabilitation Center is the same facility that treated Matt Brown, a Massachusetts native who suffered a spinal cord injury during a high school hockey game 11 years ago.

Brown graduated from Norwood High School and launched his own foundation to support individuals battling spinal cord injuries and their families.

WCVB reports Brown's family has kept in contact with Quetta's since the injury occurred.

The Boston Bruins were also among the thousands of supporters to reach out to the Providence resident and his family.

On Monday, the Bruins announced their foundation's 50/50 raffle reached a record $300,000 jackpot for Quetta.

A GoFundMe page has also been launched to help Quetta's family. Donations can also be made via the Matt Brown Foundationwebsite and the "AJ's Army"website.
