Judge Rules On Tory Lanez's Motion For New Trial

Tory Lanez will not get a new trial after a judge finally weighed in on the matter.

On Tuesday, May 9, Judge Herriford denied Lanez's request during a hearing after the artist's legal team argued the various reasons why they felt their client had an unfair trial. In response to the judge's decision, Lanez's lawyer Jose Baez and his team filed a motion to bar Herriford from Lanez's case and claimed he couldn't make a ruling until the motion was resolved. According to reporter Meghan Cuniff, the judge went through all of Baez's main arguments and shut down all of them.

The Sorry 4 What artist is seeking to overturn his conviction after a jury found him guilty of three felony charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm. In order to do that, his lawyer Jose Baez filed a motion for a new trial to prove his innocence. Baez pointed to "extreme racism" and misleading DNA evidence among other examples to show that Lanez didn't get a fair trial.

“I think it racializes the proceedings,” Baez told Law & Crime Network about the evidence used during the trial. “Utilizing rap persona, creative expression and rap lyrics puts the accused in a very tough position… it’s infiltrated by extreme racism and should never see the inside of a court.”

Lanez faces up to 22 years and eight months plus deportation. He's scheduled to be sentenced on June 13. Check out the full timeline of his sentencing below.
