The False Stereotypes About the East County

July 17, 2025

You’ve been hearing a lot this week on San Diego’s Morning News about the communities of the East County.

And probably discovering some things you might not have ever known about an area stretching from La Mesa to Jacumba.

Unfortunately, some of what people have heard when it comes to the East County are the false stereotypes about it.

As the editor of the East County Magazine website has put it, some people when they think about the East County think it’s filled with “red necks, gun toters, folks with a kind of a hick mentality, cowboys and even white supremacist gangs.

Some of the stereotypes also include things about residents who are from the Middle East.

It’s often said that what you think about a place may not be what it’s really like until you spend some time there.

We hope this week of exploring the East County here on KOGO, a lot of folks in the North County, the South County and in the city along the coast have learned something valuable about a special part of San Diego County.
