It’s That Time for San Diego’s Population Explosion

July 18, 2025

If you feel like it’s more crowded in San Diego during the next week or so, it’s because it will be.

It’s that time of the summer when there are a lot of tourists, and especially a lot of so-called “Zonie’s” from Arizona who flee the daily temperatures into the 100’s for the beaches here.

And there are at least 3 big events going on,. The Pride parade and festival in Hillcrest amid some concerns about protests due to the headline performer, the opening of the Del Mar horse racing season that will tie up a lot of traffic along the 5 freeway…and the biggest event of all, the Comic-Con, the grandaddy of them all that means an overflowing convention Center and a packed downtown.

All happening at the same time and also at a time when the weather forecast is picture perfect San Diego, with no heat wave, as we sometimes get in late July, but instead a lot of sunshine yet mild temperatures and only slightly cool at night.

This all means hundreds of thousands of visitors in San Diego, and that’s why San Diego Police spread the news they did this past week, about having extra patrols and beefing up security and urging everyone to just be aware of their surroundings, and if you see something, say something.

And you don’t need to be a tourist or a visitor to heed their advice.
