Martin Short was witness to his Only Murders in the Building costar Selena Gomez marrying her husband Benny Blanco, but the revelry was nearly cut short after he made a big mistake during the reception.
Gomez and Blanco tied the knot in a romantic California ceremony in September 2025. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday (January 21), the Mars Attacks! actor, 75, detailed how "the wedding was perfect and it was beautiful" before he almost ruined the party by cutting into the newlyweds' wedding cake before they could, per Page Six.
Short was enjoying the reception with around 12 Only Murders costars, including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd, hanging out together in "individual seating areas with couches and chairs" in "big tents."
"And there was a wedding cake by our section but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back, so after a few hours — and they haven't cut their wedding cake yet — Steve said he was going to leave."
Short, who admitted he'd "maybe [had] a cocktail," told Martin he "can't leave yet without a piece of wedding cake" and took a fork to the confection, much to the horror of his friends.
"I had a fork in my hand, and I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it the other and then all the people in our group scream, 'Marty!'" he recalled, because it turns out it was the wedding cake.
The comedian said he "tried to fix it" but ultimately the wedding coordinator and chef saved the day.
"Then they did surgery but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake and that it was beautiful but now it had a little work done," he said. A photo of the heart-shaped dessert reading "Just Married" was shown, giving the audience a look at the almost perfect confection.
While he and Martin joked that they couldn't let Gomez know about the near-miss, at least right away, the mishap didn't escape her attention as the Rare Beauty founder playfully ribbed her costar later in the night about his faux pas.
"As I was leaving, Selena came by: 'Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!'"
Martin gushed over the happy couple and their "beautiful" ceremony.
"It is such a great thing to go to a wedding where you just know that these people are perfect for each other," he said, adding, "Selena is like an extra child of mine. We adore her so much, and she found this guy, and he's the greatest guy, and they have the greatest hang, and they're wildly in love."
