The suspect who opened fire outside the White House on Saturday has been identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, according to multiple reports. The Secret Service says the suspect fired shots near the White House's outer perimeter around 6 p.m. local time. Secret Service police returned fire, and Best was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A bystander was also injured during the incident, though details about their condition remain unclear.
Best had previous encounters with law enforcement, including an arrest in July 2025 for attempting to access the White House, after which he was sent to a psychiatric facility. The Secret Service confirmed that President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the shooting, but neither he nor any Secret Service agents were harmed.
The shooting led to a brief lockdown of the White House, which has since been lifted. The incident occurred at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just a few hundred feet from the White House. The Secret Service, along with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, is investigating the shooting.
The motive behind Best's actions is still unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. The area around the White House remains heavily secured, with streets blocked off as authorities continue to process the scene.
