The Met Unveils Prince’s Love Symbol Guitar On Music Icon’s Birthday

A museum exhibit fit for a Prince.

The late music icon's legendary Love Symbol guitar is among the items displayed in a new exhibition entitled Musical Bodies at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The exhibit, which began days before what would have been the music legend's 68th birthday, "explores the relationship between musical instruments and the body," per the museum's website.

The "Purple Rain" musician, who died in April 2016 of an accidental drug overdose, often played the signature purple guitar at shows in the 1990s.

In April, Mayte Garcia, Prince's ex, opened up about what made him so special.

"Prince was old school," Garcia told PEOPLE at the time. "He'd never leave the house without looking amazing, and that was him. You'd never catch him in sweatpants and no makeup, so we were always ready. It was just a natural thing. It was habitual. We were always on. That's how he lived. And a lot of people don't know how funny he was."

The exhibit runs now through September 27.
