Shania Twain said it was “very, very sureal” to collaborate with Country Music Hall of Fame member Tanya Tucker.
Twain, 60, teamed up with Tucker on the title track of her new, seventh studio record, Little Miss Twain. The song is inspired by Twain’s late mother’s unwavering belief that her daughter’s talent would help her become “the next Tanya Tucker.”
The Come On Over icon said in a new interview with PEOPLE, published on Thursday (July 29), that during this album-making process, “I’ve already spent all of my life processing the challenges [I’ve had]. I’m at a place where I really enjoy looking back on it with a smile.
“Tanya Tucker was the only child star at the time in country music [when I was growing up], so that was my mother’s reference for who she believed I could be,” Twain told PEOPLE, sharing why the collaboration was “very, very surreal” to her. “I never did become a child star — I wouldn’t be successful till long after my mother was already gone — but I was thinking about her when I wrote that song, as I’m looking back on where I come from, the feelings and experiences of my youth and how she was my manager, my agent, my coach. I was ‘Little Miss Twain’ with a huge guitar singing in bars. Tanya understood that my mother had big dreams for me and that they were coming true in such a literal way in that moment of recording with her.”

“Little Miss Twain and those formative years of my life were just a distant private memory until recently and now it’s a shared story,” Twain said when her new record arrived on Friday (July 24). “The same as the album, it was mine and now ‘Little Miss Twain’ is ours! Please take a listen and see if it speaks to you. I’m full of anxiety and excitement at the response but even if you find one lyric that speaks to you or makes you feel something I’ll be happy. The emotional journey on this album was a true rollercoaster and there were moments where I felt like I was sitting with my younger self while my mother looked over me. It was very painful at times, but telling some of these stories out loud was also incredibly healing, and then there was the fun and laughter... There are songs here that are also about good vibes, summer days and feeling good! Thank you for going into the next chapter with me - it’s not easy to evolve as an artist and keep your people with you but you’ve been loyal and supportive through it all.
“This one means so much and now it’s yours. Listen loud, from top to bottom, and come home with me to Northern Ontario, Canada ❤️”
