Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is in the hospital after being involved in a nasty car accident in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina.  The "Charlotte Observer" reports Newton was involved in a crash that included a car flipping over a bridge and another vehicle in an intersection. His truck was badly damaged and he was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

According to the paper, Newton's vehicle crashed and overturned on the Church Street bridge near Bank of America Stadium where the Panthers play.  The team is off today, so it's unclear if Newton was going to or coming from the Panthers' facility.

Charlotte television station WCNC tweeted a photo of Newton being loaded into an ambulance.

According the Panthers, Cam Newton has two fractures in his back. Tony Romo suffered a similar injury earlier this season and missed one game. Newton will remain in the hospital overnight for observation.
