(NEWSER) – The Paris train hero who was stabbed outside a Sacramento bar Thursday may have been trying to defend a woman at the time. A worker at a nearby liquor store who witnessed the fight tells CBS Sacramento that Spencer Stone, one of the three Americans who foiled a terror attack on a French train in August, was walking down the street as part of a group that appeared to be together.

"Obviously they had left the club together," he says, referring to Badlands, a nightclub down the street. "They knew each other or something; they had been hanging out before this happened." A woman appeared to be fighting with one of the men, "hitting him with a plastic bag," and then the man punched her in the face, the worker says. "And the big dude, the white guy, stood up and kinda got in his face," he says, referring to Stone.
