United Airlines is shutting down operations at six airports as a major winter storm hits the East Coast. The closings affect Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC today and tomorrow. Weather-permitting, United hopes to resume service on Sunday. The airline is waiving change fees for customers and advising people to expect additional delays this weekend. Earlier, American Airlines grounded all Saturday flights in Washington, Philadelphia and New Jersey.
Nearly six-thousand flights have already been scrubbed for Friday and Saturday. American Airlines says it will ground all its Saturday flights at Philadelphia, Washington National, Baltimore/Washington, and Washington Dulles airports because of forecasts calling for up to two feet of snow. Blizzard watches and warnings are in effect for many areas from Washington, DC and Baltimore to New York and New Jersey.
