Hopefully Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks weren’t watching “Jeopardy” earlier this week, when a contestant confused the two rival rappers.
Nicholas Berube, a two-time champion, was well in the lead when he buzzed in to respond to this answer: “This Australian hip-hopper used the pet name/street name system to come up with her rap name.” He wrongly responded, “Who is Azealia Banks?” The correct answer, of course, is Iggy Azalea, which neither of Berube’s competitors knew either. Whoops.
Azalea’s birth name is Amethyst Amelia Kelly, and she’s explained in multiple interviews why she opted not to use it professionally. For instance, in a Vevo video last year, the star shared the “two-part saga” in which she explained that she used to wear a nameplate necklace in honor of her dog Iggy (who was named after Iggy Pop), and people would automatically assume it was her own name.
“It kind of became my nickname and I took it on board and started rapping with it,” said Azalea. But when her grandfather, himself a showbiz veteran, recommended against having a one-word, two-syllable name (seriously), she “had to think of a good last name.” She chose Azalea, the “street name that my mom and family live on… and it sounds very feminine and I thought it would balance out Iggy being so masculine.”
She joked at the end of the video, “So if you see me on the street call me Iggy or I will kill you, seriously. I really will.” Berube better hope he doesn’t run into Azalea anytime soon. Interestingly, he was pretty embarrassed by his mistake, and created a Twitter account just to apologize for his mix-up… to Banks.
Hey @AZEALIABANKS - I'm the guy on Jeopardy who mixed you up with Iggy Azalea. I apologize. I actually think you're awesome.— Nicholas Berube (@nicholas_berube) January 21, 2015
Berube posted a second message saying:
He further explained to a new follower:
@Jaded_Intellect I mean I might be a dorky white dude, but I do know there's a difference btw Iggy and Azealea- had to correct the record!— Nicholas Berube (@nicholas_berube) January 21, 2015
Neither Banks nor Azalea has responded to the flub, but those two don’t need any more to argue about.
