I mean, nothing differ than what we do at the
super Bowl, But I just feel like this one maybe
we should have been able because we are representing the brand,

seems as though we should have just been given the

Well, I do know this. The New York Giants might
have the John Harbaugh experience coming up here pretty quick because,
according to Adam Schefter, the Giants and John Harbaugh are
working to finalize a deal to make him their next
head coach. So congratulations to the New York Giants. The

reports coming out of there yesterday was they didn't want
him to leave the building. He came there to meet
with them, He met Jackson Dart, they went through the
whole song and dance, and they have been putting the
full core press on Joe Shane probably recognizes, you know,
my day's there could be numbered if I don't get
this thing turned around. And so John Harbaugh looks like

he's going to be the next head coach of the
New York Giants barring any major setbacks. They expect that
deal to get finalized here probably today. So I don't
know this would be my thought on it. First, the
best available job on the market is the one John
Harbad just left. Like, I don't know where you put

the Giants, But the Raven's job is the best.

Available job of it.

It's a great point.

So it's kind of it's kind of, yeah, he lands
on his feet and he goes to a great organization
with a rich tradition, But it's nowhere close in my
mind to what he had and that he left.

I don't think it's close to Pittsburgh either, Like I think,
if you're being like honest and how you're assessing these
Baltimore Pittsburgh, those are the top two. Giants might be
third after that, and then you might I started looking
at the other situations in Tennessee and Miami and Cleveland
and Arizona, depending on the ownership, depending what they have
on the roster, what you're inheriting. But I look at

this and I say, for the Giants, it's a safe
play because.
Speaker 6 (08:15):
Of his track record. He's got a long tenure of success.
But you hire him.
Speaker 7 (08:20):
In my first immediate thoughts, who's the OC. He doesn't
call plays. He was a special teams coach. So even
though it looks good from the onset of that, it's
who's his offensive coordinator? You know, what's that offense going
to look?

Like?

Who's his defensive coordinator? Like this higher.
Speaker 7 (08:37):
I think it fans down the flames of some of
the heat that's been on the ownership group in the
front office. But it doesn't answer all the questions. You know,
you bring in a guy like kevin'st to fans gets different.
You know exactly what you're getting in him and what
you're bringing in I think you do to a degree
in horriball, but there's still question marks about what the
defense outside of the person out, what their scheme is

going to look like. Was the offensive seaming to look like?
Is he bringing the coaching staff in Baltimore with him?
That's the case, Like all right, I mean what we'll
see what Todd Munkin or whoever does to build a
system around Jackson, Dart and camp Scott to building other playmakers.
But I would say this to me very similar to
you is it wasn't the top job.

But I think it's it's a it's a.

Great organization, and it gives him the chance to build
up now with another younger quarterback and go on a
run if he can keep them healthy.

And depending on the type of system they put him in.

I think it's a big if and and it's an
I feel like it's concerning and in the sense that
while we look at this New York Giants team and
we say it is a very, very as you mentioned,
a historical and legacy driven franchise, but they have still

had organizational dysfunction as of recent years, and so much
so where it almost comes into play that the conversation
has to be.

It has to be had have they lost that.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
That element that they had when they had the old
head mare and tishes in the office running things?

Have they lost that?

And And that's a to me, that's probably the biggest
question that needs to be answered is where is this
organization and and and are they living off of the
past with their reputation and should be started to viewed
for what they are now versus what they were or

are they the same? I think that's that's the biggest
question to me. But just a blush first glance at it.
It's like you bring in a coach and the one
thing I can't comprehend and maybe you guys can help
help me with this. You bring in a coach that
has early exits in the playoffs or hasn't been able

to complete it. You had one year they got pretty
close and while I won't blame it on Harball, it's
still the team failed and if you're bringing him there
and personnel wise, this is in my estimation, it's a
lesser team roster wise than what he's coming from.

They haven't historically.

In the last few years given coaches a real opportunity
to build up a roster. It's been one and done
for for some, it's been not very much time for others.
So I think it's I don't know unless this Giants
team is really going to embrace what it takes to

build this team up to being a more competitive team.

You have a D line in place.
Speaker 5 (12:02):
That's kind of pretty much all I would give them
right now.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
That's pretty much all I know.

They have a receiver, I know they got neighbors, but
all I would really say you have right now definitively
is a D line and the rest of it.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
You got to figure out what you're going to do
then with the quarterbacks position.

The only team that's got a worst record in the
last ten years and the Giants is the Jets in
the entire league. That's the company they keep. So I mean,
Giants fans are probably looking at John Harbrough going We'll
take a one and done in the playoffs. Damn like that.
That's an upgrade over where we've been for the past decade.

They've been brutal for a long time now, and so
it's a big name higher I just I don't know
that this reaps the instantaneous success that I think some
Giants fans might feel like. It's a big name and
a big market, But I don't know. Well of the
question is can he get it done? For the ones done?

But before there was a Reggie Bush, there was a
guy by the name of Peter Warck. So you know,
he got in trouble for the Dillards deal him and
Lavernie is Cole and I want to say there was

It was three of them, but they got a discount

hands down, it should have been Peter Wark. And then
he loses to Troy Troy Walters for the blintn the

So at the Home Depot Awards, I look at Chris
Foyler like I was about the body slamming.

So intense on stage right now, like you're ready to
play it, and I was like, yeah, I'm just you know.
I was just really upset that Peter Ward didn't get
the Blintina cough.

I couldn't believe it. How do you not get the
Blittni coff.

I was like, so, if y'all not going to give
him the Blitni cough and y'all didn't give him any
other awards, then I'm gonna give him mine because it's
the best.

Defensive player in the country.

I'm gonna tell you right now, you ask any of
us who you would never ever want to see in
a dark alley on a football field, it would be
Peter Ward. And I gave him my I gave him
my Beneric Award on stage on ESPN National Television. I
think I embarrassed the Maxwell people, and if I did,
I apologize. I apologize for that, but I definitely felt

it was well, felt like it was appropriate.

That's one of the tough things because because Troy probably
had better stats. And I remember I went through this
with Samarja. Samarga was the best receiver in college football.
You could make the case two years in a row,
and he never got it. He went back to back,
but they gave it to Mike Hass at Oregon State
because of stats. Like the reality is if if you
would have asked anyone who's the toughest guy to go

up against, it would have been Samargia.

And like that was part of the issue that with
some of those awards.

It is like you're like, all right, Like everyone watched
Peter Warck and I remember grew up watching you know,
obviously Florida State at that time.

I mean, he was the most electric, the most dynamic.

I don't think what you're saying is hyperbole, by the way,
Like I think a lot of people forget about the
impact that Peter wark had because you know, when Reggie
came along, he came along during a period of time
where you just had the internet, so you started to
have like that kind of phone where people could see
highlights and so forth. Like I remember watching highlights of
Reggie back when he was at Helix High school in

San Diego, and that was my first time when I
like looked him up.

On the internet.

When they're like, hey, you got to call this kid
no name trying to recruit him, I'm like, all right,
like let me, let me give him a call, let
me try to like you know, you know, just give
him my pitch to come to Notre Dame. And I
saw the highlights, I was like, dang, oh, this is ridiculous. Well, like,
that's the thing is that was Peter Warck. Like Peter
Wark was on the same thing in Florida State And
a lot of people don't recall, remember because you didn't

have the Internet, you didn't have like things that were
readily accessible to see what he was capable of doing.
I mean, and he's one of those talents that generationally
like it doesn't matter what era Peter Wark played, and
he would have been.

was Kijona Carter.

Rashaan Salam for the Heisman this that year. But outside
of Rashon Salam and us being in the twenty twos together,
like I would have I would have sat here and
told a story about how much Keijana deserved it over Rasan.
But it's like, you know, they're both family now, so

I won't say anything bad about Rassan Salam. But if
there was a person that should have got the heisman
and didn't get the heisman, it would have been that
undefeated year that Penn State had. That Nebraska it was
was crowned the national title that year, the national champions.

But but that Penn State team went undefeated. That was
the year they had key John Carter and Carrie Collins
and Kyle Brady and all those guys. But Key John
Carter was to me, I mean he was. He's the goat.
Like there's a few goats at Penn State names that
pop up, you know, Franco's name, Jack Ham, Shane Colin,

Like ke John Carter is literally a goat, he's synonymous.

to the college football playoffs, where you're like, you let
in some of the little schools. You're like, all right,
like they had a great season at that level, but
can they really compete at this level? And that's that's
where like part of those discussions arguments I'm sure take
place behind the scenes, but that's where like you look

this long to let the dude in?

guys that you know as household names, weren't you know,
they weren't in.

Have you played three years and blew the doors off
the sport? And because you didn't get your degree and
you left early, like you couldn't you couldn't be a
Hall of Famer.

I mean it the the premise of it is correct.
You know, they are the founder and they are the
holders of the Campbell Trophy, which is it's an academic award.
The National Football Foundation is it stands for so much
more than just playing the game. It's it's really deeply

based in the educational value of being a student athlete
and more more specifically a football player as a student athlete.
So the standard of it makes sense. I don't think anyone,
I mean maybe only Eric Dickerson what would have said
they they had a big problem with it. But but

they've since changed that and and so now you see
a lot more guys like I'm on that list. You know,
I'm on that list of guys like I was a
two time what I was a unanimous and I was
a consensus All American in three years. And I mean,
if you're generally that good, there's probably a strong chance,

like the only reason why I left. It wasn't It
wasn't because I didn't want to finish academically.

I was just I was losing everybody that I was
out there on the field with.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
I played two years with Courtney Brown, Brandon Short, Mac Morrison,
David Macklin, Derek Fox. I was leaving if I if
I would have came back, I would have hurt my
draft stock tremendously. You know, Mike Vick and all of
them were coming out the next year. I mighta not
have been in the top five top ten picks of

the Looking back on it, maybe I should have stayed
so I could have gone later. But but but but
I came out because my team was graduating. So you know,
sometimes you make decisions. And it wasn't based off of
the money. It was just based off of I was
the number one rated player in that draft. I couldn't
have gone any higher. So I had to declare, you know,
(30:11):
because it was what it was. But yeah, it definitely
played a part. But now that isn't that element the
whole graduation, you know, part that's not that's I don't
think that's a part of the conterior anymore.

Another guy who got in Chris Peterson. I didn't realize
that he won basically eighty percent of his games as
a coach in college.
Speaker 4 (30:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (30:33):
Hell, he was a hell of a coach, man, I'll
tell you this much. He's a hell of an analyst.

I love conversations with him. I love every time he
gets the chance to talk about ball, just to listen
because you know, he did it at a high level
of multiple places. And I think when you look at
what he built at Boise too, you know he's one
of those program builds. Like if you if you look
at Butler, the have Brad Stevens, which I think it's
it's fair to say Butler folks might take that, you know,
it might have someone else in mind. But I think

of Brad Stevens, how he build up that program. I
think the same thing when you think of Chris Peterson
and Boise, Like Boise, you winning conference championships with the
group of six level, I feel like it kind of
starts and ends with with Peterson as far as who
built that program.

So it's a credit to him, and I.

Can't think of his is a mark few is that
the coach at Gonzaga has been there forever yeah, yeah,
like the same thing, like a zaga has been put
on the map because of him, you know, outside of that,
like you know, other people again can talk about someone else,
but like those are the guys who put those programs
on the map. And again another guy you can make
the case for a coach. It's it's been a long
time coming. And Gary Patterson's one where you know, when
(31:38):
I when I comb back through and go back and
look at some of the elements that he did, what
he did schematically and defensively at TCU and just even
their their run of success and that program, you know,
he had changed the games in a lot of ways,
like when you look at how so many defenses played
boundary versus field calls and how they go about playing
those widened splits by wide rest. A lot of it's
(32:01):
the stuff that he's been doing where they've been the
kind of stealing gaps with that that player is in
the run pass conflict, and the way they've got about
kind of playing those guys on the outside. It's it's
really interesting, but he was always the kryptonite to a
lot of those art you could call him art Brow's
offenses or his up tempo spread offenses.

He always had an answer for it.
Speaker 7 (32:21):
So he was one of those guys with a lot
of people from a defensive standpoint would go to to
consult and talk.

About what he did what made him so successful at CCU.

head coach. So congratulations to the New York Giants. The

reports coming out of there yesterday was they didn't want
him to leave the building. He came there to meet
with them, He met Jackson Dart, they went through the
whole song and dance, and they have been putting the
full core press on Joe Shane probably recognizes, you know,
my day's there could be numbered if I don't get
this thing turned around. And so John Harbaugh looks like

he's going to be the next head coach of the
New York Giants barring any major setbacks. They expect that
deal to get finalized here probably today. So I don't
know this would be my thought on it. First, the
best available job on the market is the one John
Harbad just left. Like, I don't know where you put

the Giants, But the Raven's job is the best.

It's a great point.

So it's kind of it's kind of, yeah, he lands
on his feet and he goes to a great organization
with a rich tradition, But it's nowhere close in my
mind to what he had and that he left.

I don't think it's close to Pittsburgh either, Like I think,
if you're being like honest and how you're assessing these
Baltimore Pittsburgh, those are the top two. Giants might be
third after that, and then you might I started looking
at the other situations in Tennessee and Miami and Cleveland
and Arizona, depending on the ownership, depending what they have
on the roster, what you're inheriting. But I look at

this and I say, for the Giants, it's a safe
play because.

Of his track record. He's got a long tenure of success.
But you hire him.

In my first immediate thoughts, who's the OC. He doesn't
call plays. He was a special teams coach. So even
though it looks good from the onset of that, it's
who's his offensive coordinator? You know, what's that offense going
to look?

Who's his defensive coordinator? Like this higher.
Speaker 7 (08:37):
I think it fans down the flames of some of
the heat that's been on the ownership group in the
front office. But it doesn't answer all the questions. You know,
you bring in a guy like kevin'st to fans gets different.
You know exactly what you're getting in him and what
you're bringing in I think you do to a degree
in horriball, but there's still question marks about what the
defense outside of the person out, what their scheme is

going to look like. Was the offensive seaming to look like?
Is he bringing the coaching staff in Baltimore with him?
That's the case, Like all right, I mean what we'll
see what Todd Munkin or whoever does to build a
system around Jackson, Dart and camp Scott to building other playmakers.
But I would say this to me very similar to
you is it wasn't the top job.

But I think it's it's a it's a.

Great organization, and it gives him the chance to build
up now with another younger quarterback and go on a
run if he can keep them healthy.

And depending on the type of system they put him in.

I think it's a big if and and it's an
I feel like it's concerning and in the sense that
while we look at this New York Giants team and
we say it is a very, very as you mentioned,
a historical and legacy driven franchise, but they have still

had organizational dysfunction as of recent years, and so much
so where it almost comes into play that the conversation
has to be.

It has to be had have they lost that.

That element that they had when they had the old
head mare and tishes in the office running things?

Have they lost that?

And And that's a to me, that's probably the biggest
question that needs to be answered is where is this
organization and and and are they living off of the
past with their reputation and should be started to viewed
for what they are now versus what they were or

are they the same? I think that's that's the biggest
question to me. But just a blush first glance at it.
It's like you bring in a coach and the one
thing I can't comprehend and maybe you guys can help
help me with this. You bring in a coach that
has early exits in the playoffs or hasn't been able

to complete it. You had one year they got pretty
close and while I won't blame it on Harball, it's
still the team failed and if you're bringing him there
and personnel wise, this is in my estimation, it's a
lesser team roster wise than what he's coming from.

They haven't historically.

In the last few years given coaches a real opportunity
to build up a roster. It's been one and done
for for some, it's been not very much time for others.
So I think it's I don't know unless this Giants
team is really going to embrace what it takes to

build this team up to being a more competitive team.

You have a D line in place.

That's kind of pretty much all I would give them
right now.

They have a receiver, I know they got neighbors, but
all I would really say you have right now definitively
is a D line and the rest of it.

You got to figure out what you're going to do
then with the quarterbacks position.

The only team that's got a worst record in the
last ten years and the Giants is the Jets in
the entire league. That's the company they keep. So I mean,
Giants fans are probably looking at John Harbrough going We'll
take a one and done in the playoffs. Damn like that.
That's an upgrade over where we've been for the past decade.

They've been brutal for a long time now, and so
it's a big name higher I just I don't know
that this reaps the instantaneous success that I think some
Giants fans might feel like. It's a big name and
a big market, But I don't know. Well of the
question is can he get it done? For the ones done?

So at the Home Depot Awards, I look at Chris

So intense on stage right now, like you're ready to
play it, and I was like, yeah, I'm just you know.
I was just really upset that Peter Ward didn't get

I was like, so, if y'all not going to give
him the Blitni cough and y'all didn't give him any

I'm gonna tell you right now, you ask any of
us who you would never ever want to see in
a dark alley on a football field, it would be
Peter Ward. And I gave him my I gave him
my Beneric Award on stage on ESPN National Television. I
think I embarrassed the Maxwell people, and if I did,
I apologize. I apologize for that, but I definitely felt

it was well, felt like it was appropriate.

That's one of the tough things because because Troy probably
had better stats. And I remember I went through this
with Samarja. Samarga was the best receiver in college football.
You could make the case two years in a row,
and he never got it. He went back to back,
but they gave it to Mike Hass at Oregon State
because of stats. Like the reality is if if you
would have asked anyone who's the toughest guy to go

up against, it would have been Samargia.

And like that was part of the issue that with
some of those awards.

It is like you're like, all right, Like everyone watched
Peter Warck and I remember grew up watching you know,
obviously Florida State at that time.

I mean, he was the most electric, the most dynamic.

I don't think what you're saying is hyperbole, by the way,
Like I think a lot of people forget about the
impact that Peter wark had because you know, when Reggie
came along, he came along during a period of time
where you just had the internet, so you started to
have like that kind of phone where people could see
highlights and so forth. Like I remember watching highlights of
Reggie back when he was at Helix High school in

San Diego, and that was my first time when I
like looked him up.

On the internet.

When they're like, hey, you got to call this kid
no name trying to recruit him, I'm like, all right,
like let me, let me give him a call, let
me try to like you know, you know, just give
him my pitch to come to Notre Dame. And I
saw the highlights, I was like, dang, oh, this is ridiculous. Well, like,
that's the thing is that was Peter Warck. Like Peter
Wark was on the same thing in Florida State And
a lot of people don't recall, remember because you didn't

have the Internet, you didn't have like things that were
readily accessible to see what he was capable of doing.
I mean, and he's one of those talents that generationally
like it doesn't matter what era Peter Wark played, and
he would have been.

He was a beast. He was a beast.

And by the way, to keep the story's going, so
was Kijona Carter.

Rashaan Salam for the Heisman this that year. But outside
of Rashon Salam and us being in the twenty twos together,
like I would have I would have sat here and
told a story about how much Keijana deserved it over Rasan.

I won't say anything bad about Rassan Salam. But if
there was a person that should have got the heisman
and didn't get the heisman, it would have been that
undefeated year that Penn State had. That Nebraska it was
was crowned the national title that year, the national champions.

But but that Penn State team went undefeated. That was
the year they had key John Carter and Carrie Collins
and Kyle Brady and all those guys. But Key John
Carter was to me, I mean he was. He's the goat.
Like there's a few goats at Penn State names that
pop up, you know, Franco's name, Jack Ham, Shane Colin,

Like ke John Carter is literally a goat, he's synonymous.

he was a two time All American.

at like I remember I used to seek Johnny Carter
at the Orange Bowl. They have a golf outing every year.

And I always like, you know, pay my.

Respects to all those guys who came before you, and
you know, he's one of those where I was like
after I saw him, I was like, man, I don't
think he has gotten the College Football Hall of Fame,
but he should. Like he was incredible. And it's not
the takeaway from you know, younger guys who got in.
But honestly, if we're really going to go there like
this would be the conversation. You kind of start to

look at the list and you look at some of
the players, you go, Okay, it's almost like comparing it
to the college football playoffs, where you're like, you let
in some of the little schools. You're like, all right,
like they had a great season at that level, but
can they really compete at this level? And that's that's
where like part of those discussions arguments I'm sure take
place behind the scenes, but that's where like you look

at k Johnny, You're like, how did it take him
this long to let the dude in?

It's crazy, man.

Yeah, And for people.

Don't know, like it has to be they're not even
eligible until ten years after their last college season.

I think it's what it is, is that correct little

It's something like that. And then there was education. Education
is a very very big part of it. So they
just started not too long ago allowing guys who hadn't
gotten a degree to get in. For a long time,
if you didn't have a degree, you couldn't get in.
Really and I played it, yeah, yeah, so, and I
had played a major part in why a lot of

guys that you know as household names, weren't you know,
they weren't in.

Have you played three years and blew the doors off
the sport? And because you didn't get your degree and
you left early, like you couldn't you couldn't be a
Hall of Famer.

I mean it the the premise of it is correct.
You know, they are the founder and they are the
holders of the Campbell Trophy, which is it's an academic award.
The National Football Foundation is it stands for so much
more than just playing the game. It's it's really deeply

based in the educational value of being a student athlete
and more more specifically a football player as a student athlete.
So the standard of it makes sense. I don't think anyone,
I mean maybe only Eric Dickerson what would have said
they they had a big problem with it. But but
(28:55):
they've since changed that and and so now you see
a lot more guys like I'm on that list. You know,
I'm on that list of guys like I was a
two time what I was a unanimous and I was
a consensus All American in three years. And I mean,
if you're generally that good, there's probably a strong chance,

like the only reason why I left. It wasn't It
wasn't because I didn't want to finish academically.

I was just I was losing everybody that I was
out there on the field with.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
I played two years with Courtney Brown, Brandon Short, Mac Morrison,
David Macklin, Derek Fox. I was leaving if I if
I would have came back, I would have hurt my
draft stock tremendously. You know, Mike Vick and all of
them were coming out the next year. I mighta not
have been in the top five top ten picks of

the Looking back on it, maybe I should have stayed
so I could have gone later. But but but but
I came out because my team was graduating. So you know,
sometimes you make decisions. And it wasn't based off of
the money. It was just based off of I was
the number one rated player in that draft. I couldn't
have gone any higher. So I had to declare, you know,

because it was what it was. But yeah, it definitely
played a part. But now that isn't that element the
whole graduation, you know, part that's not that's I don't
think that's a part of the conterior anymore.

Another guy who got in Chris Peterson. I didn't realize
that he won basically eighty percent of his games as
a coach in college.

Yeah.

Hell, he was a hell of a coach, man, I'll
tell you this much. He's a hell of an analyst.

I love conversations with him. I love every time he
gets the chance to talk about ball, just to listen
because you know, he did it at a high level
of multiple places. And I think when you look at
what he built at Boise too, you know he's one
of those program builds. Like if you if you look
at Butler, the have Brad Stevens, which I think it's
it's fair to say Butler folks might take that, you know,
it might have someone else in mind. But I think
(30:59):
of Brad Stevens, how he build up that program. I
think the same thing when you think of Chris Peterson
and Boise, Like Boise, you winning conference championships with the
group of six level, I feel like it kind of
starts and ends with with Peterson as far as who
built that program.

So it's a credit to him, and I.

Can't think of his is a mark few is that
the coach at Gonzaga has been there forever yeah, yeah,
like the same thing, like a zaga has been put
on the map because of him, you know, outside of that,
like you know, other people again can talk about someone else,
but like those are the guys who put those programs
on the map. And again another guy you can make
the case for a coach. It's it's been a long
time coming. And Gary Patterson's one where you know, when

I when I comb back through and go back and
look at some of the elements that he did, what
he did schematically and defensively at TCU and just even
their their run of success and that program, you know,
he had changed the games in a lot of ways,
like when you look at how so many defenses played
boundary versus field calls and how they go about playing
those widened splits by wide rest. A lot of it's

the stuff that he's been doing where they've been the
kind of stealing gaps with that that player is in
the run pass conflict, and the way they've got about
kind of playing those guys on the outside. It's it's
really interesting, but he was always the kryptonite to a
lot of those art you could call him art Brow's
offenses or his up tempo spread offenses.

He always had an answer for it.

So he was one of those guys with a lot
of people from a defensive standpoint would go to to
consult and talk.
