I did want to ask you this because we were
talking earlier about you know, Patrick Mahomes eyeing week one
as his return, talking to Yahoo's Sports and saying, look,
that's you know, that's the plan, and you know obviously
you know they're going to.

But I think it was you when we had a
conversation a couple of months back where I asked, Hey,
who's more likely to return week one? Patrick Mahomes or
Daniel Jones, And you kind of, in so many words,
said well, maybe both, because Daniel Jones feels like he
can do everything. Patrick Mahomes, like there's real optimism this
is going to happen. When when was the belief that

and and what was the what gave them the impression
that maybe he doesn't need to start the year on
the PubL list.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
With Mahomes, you're saying specifically.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Yeah, specifically, yeah, I mean I think it's like he's
been consistently way ahead to the point where in the spring,
I mean, you know what happens with guys like this
when they're coming back from those sorts of injuries. A
lot of times you have to like sort of hold
them back, you know, because they feel good and they
feel like they're ready to go.

And you know, I'm sure you.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Experienced that LeVar at some point with an injury where
like you know, like it's okay, I'm making great progress
and I want to keep taking steps.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
And you know, I kind of got the idea, like
I was talking to somebody, think.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
It was probably like middle of May, and you know,
he's still myhomes is still in whatever five months off
the injury at that.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
Point, and I said, I asked, like, is he gonna
be able to.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Do everything in training camp? And the answer I got
back with interesting, it was based on where he is. Definitely,
like he'll be able to do everything, definitely, but like
we may have to be careful with him, just because
once you tell him go, he's going to go. And
so you know, we need to be smart about that
(07:08):
part of it and like being judicious about how you know,
we handle this going forward, because you know, for us,
the priority is making sure that we have the best
version of him from September through February. You know, it's
not like, oh wow, how impressive was that in July?
(07:29):
It's how can we get there? So that's the balance.
I think. When I heard that, it's like, okay, like,
so you're now at the point where it's like like
he probably he probably thinks he a plan and game
right now, you know, but like you have to protect
him against himself. When you start to hear those things,
you know it's in a good place. And so, you know,
(07:50):
I think for a while now they felt like like
he would be you know, pretty whole physically, I mean
not all the way there, but pretty whole physically for
training camp.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
And that was set the stage for him to be
out there.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
We're going now there are other stages to this sort
of injury too, which you know, like that part of it,
it's you know, like kind of getting used to it
and getting used to having bodies around your legs.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
And getting in live action and so you know.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Is it is it going to be the full version
of my homes that we've gotten used to watching over
the last you know, eight years. That part, I think
is like a little bit more remains to be seen,
because it's just everybody comes back.

Off off of this specific.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Injury a little bit differently, but physically he's in a
really good spot.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
It'll be interesting to see from I was telling Jonas earlier, Abe,
you know, I know DeMarco Murray. I know Sean Barber
very very well. Sean Barber is my former teammates, super
close buddy of mine, and they were telling me how
phenomenal he's moving and how phenomenal he looks. And it
just seems as though you know at the quarterback's position
(08:57):
that you know you could potentially pull off. Now with
that being said, he is a runner. So what have
the conversations been about that, Abe? Because the one thing
about like what you mentioned and you you said that
I may have experienced.
Speaker 6 (09:13):
I did.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
I did feel good coming back from a torn moniscus injury,
and I did go out there too early and I
did slip and bone bruise my knee and.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Set myself back.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
So that does really exist where you can set yourself
back by coming back a little bit too early in
this scenario, do you I think the biggest thing is
is how do you think they're handling or how you
think he feels about the idea of having to be
a less mobile quarterback based off of the idea of
(09:46):
what that could create in terms of danger for him.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Well, it's interesting because I had this conversation with him,
you know, last year, because he was turning thirty, right,
and I remember like asking him, like, do you feel
like you know you've got to adjust the way you play?
And his answer was really interesting. He said, like, I'm
always working on that, you know, and like his it's
(10:12):
it's fascinating.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
With him because like if you look like.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
His his the amount of times he runs, the frequency
of that, it goes up in the bigger games, and
he's really always been cognizant of that, you know, and
really smart about that. And like, I know, you know
the points of the year the games where I got
to just kind of keep a governor on that, and
I know where there are the situations where I take
(10:40):
the governor off. And we've seen it in the playoffs, right,
Like he very clearly like is more aggressive as a
runner in the playoffs, which changes the dynamic a little
bit for everyone around him. So it's something like I
think he's always been cognizant of I think it's something
he's always working on. And you know, the cool thing is,
like I thinks as the years have gone on, you know,
(11:03):
and he's had a bunch of like lower leg injuries,
and there was some concern over that too, but it's
forced him to think about these things. And so you know,
I always use Ben Roethlisberger as the example and the
reason why. I remember when Todd Haley got there, and
that was in I think two thousand, I want to
say it was like two thousand and thirteen, maybe twenty twelve,
(11:24):
somewhere in there. But when Todd Haley got there as
the offensive.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Coordinator for for Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Basically, Haley's point to Ben was, look like, you know,
you're deeper into your career now, just let us.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Make this easier on you.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
You know.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
And you got Antonio Brown, and you got Mike Wallace
and you got Emmanuel Sanders. Let us take that weight
off of you. You don't need to be superman all
the time. And you know, Ben, I think effectively almost
created a second phase of his career.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
And if you look like he was putting.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Himself at risk a whole lot less, you know, over
the back half of his career. So I think that's
something a lot of quarterbacks I just have to consider.
It's something I know Josh Allen has to consider now,
you know. And I think the good news for for
chief Stands and looking at this is that it's something
that I think Patrick has always been cognizant of, and

I think he'll be able to adjust that as he
needs to coming off the knee.

you know, Aaron Donald, he works out at the team facility.
There's all these rumors and hints on social media. Is
this a fore gone conclusion that he's.

Going to come back from people you've talked to?
Speaker 2 (12:48):
I don't know about that. I don't know about fore
gone conclusion, but it does feel like it's turning that
way for sure. And I think, like the the interesting
part about this for me is going to be like
what the plan.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
Actually he is?
Speaker 6 (13:00):
You know?
Speaker 2 (13:02):
And I mentioned this a few different places now, but
like I had a conversation with Eric Weddle about this.
A couple of our last months when the news first
when when when when when the mcaffee thing happened, and
you know, like the the news start news cycle started
up on the idea that Aaron Donald could come back
after the Miles Garrett trade, and you know, I thought,
(13:23):
I think what was was really interesting about what Eric
said to me was like, you know, when he first
came back and he had been out for two years, right,
so he comes back to that playoff run and the
idea was, Okay, I'm gonna play in the nickel, but.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
They weren't such dire straits.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
And safety that within a week he became a full
time player. And he told me a story about Raheem
and Sean coming over to him in a practice and saying, okay,
well you're full code now, right.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
He's like what?
Speaker 2 (13:48):
And then he wound up playing every snap in the
divisional round, you know, and he he wound up hurting
his hamstring against the Niners in the championship game and
tearing his pack against the Bengals the Super Bowl, And
like EASi, he feels still feel those injuries, you know,
five years later, and you know it's it's just, you know,
(14:08):
I think the interesting thing about the Donald situation. That's
different than that, right is, yes, you have to consider
all those things, but Wedell was there in an emergency situation,
and that's not what this is for the Rams. Like
if Donald is back, then you know we're talking about
they have Kelbe Turner, they have Brandon Fisk, they have
(14:28):
Puna Ford, they have Ty Hamilton, and they drafted last year,
like they have real depth to detackle, so they don't
have to play him sixty or seventy plays a snaps
a game the way they did with Weddell during that
Super Bowl run. So like, okay, if you can come
in and you can manage it that way, that could
be a real nightmare for offenses who have to block
(14:51):
all those big men and then all of a sudden,
third down, here comes Aaron Donald, you know, you know,
And then I think there's the other piece of it,
which is like what's the best plan? Is the best
plan to put him through a full training camp? And
you know, then you get to the you know, you
get to the regular season and you're playing him on
(15:11):
a limited basis? Is the best plan to have like
a wink wink deal and you sign him in October
and then you ramp them up, and you have them
for a Super Bowl run. I think that's probably the
most interesting piece now is how they formulate that plan.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Abe talk to me.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
We were talking about Pickens earlier and him being on
the franchise tag, them keeping him on on the tag. Now,
you can't negotiate or redo or sign a long term
extension during regular season once that tag is signed, so
he's going to have to go.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Through the entire year.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
I believe that whole situation takes place next next offseason.
But you can, and however, make sure that that player
knows that you have every intentions of extending them or
creating a new contract for that player. Jonas seems to
(16:13):
think this is it. It's a one and done for Pickens.
I'm not certain of that. I think he was quiet
enough last year as a Dallas cowboyn and honestly, if
we're being honest, earlier part of the year, he was
the best receiver on the team, maybe the best receiver
and all of pro football. In the conversation now kind
(16:33):
of tailed off at the end, But how do you
see this situation kind of developing in Dallas with Pickens?
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Yeah, I think the best way to describe this is like,
you know, I think it's kind of that was great.
We want to see more, you know, And like Pickens'
history was checkered enough at Georgia that it helped the
contribute and following in the draft. Talented as he is,
I don't think anybody ever question his talent.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
And then, you know, after three.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Years, when Mike Tomlin gives up on a guy for
character reasons, like that's always.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
Been like a red flag for me, you know, like when.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
He was willing to walk away from Antonio Brown or
Mike Wallace or Le'Veon Bell, Like when he's willing to
walk away from.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
A guy, like he's as good at managing.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Personalities as anybody I've ever seen.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
You know, and being able to allowing.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
The personnel department to cast a wide net because he
can handle people. And so when when the Steelers with Mike,
when Mike.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
Tomlin was the coach, come to a decision.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
That, yeah, that's it. That's a pretty serious red flag.
Speaker 5 (17:44):
So you have all that history there, you know, and
then he comes in.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
And he's arguably what the second or third best receiver
in all of football last year, right, like I think
maybe behind of the guys last year, maybe behind Chase
and JSN and Pooka Nakua.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
He's somewhere in there.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
And did a great job when when when when Ceedee
Lamb was hurt and so and he was he was
a good citizen too. So, like I think, as much
as anything else, it's like, before we commit the truly
big money.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
To you, we need to see it again, you.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Know, And the franchise tag effectively allowed them to do that. Now,
the flip side is that, like you know, it's going
to be more expensive to tag him again next year
if you want to do that. And then if you
tag him again next year, then he's got.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
A ton of leverage on the negotiation for a long
term deal.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
If you don't tag him and he walks us straight
in the near and has another year like he had,
well then he's a you know, going to be a
very very expensive free agent. So no matter how you
slice this, there's great opportunity there for George Pickens.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
But I mean, I think you know, he also made
his bed.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Just as far as you know the reasons why they're
not signing him to a long.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Term deal now, Albert Brier, before I let you go,
a is this sort of the and I don't know,
maybe last weekend was, but is this the final weekend
of quote unquote freedom for you before you start the
training camp tours and all that.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah, yeah, so I'll be I'll be going out west.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
I think I think it gonna be flight on a
flight to seat all week from Sunday. So whenever that is,
we're geared up and ready to go. It's hard to
believe it's here.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
But yeah, that.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
Means six six months of I mean, I'm not climbing.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Up telephone poles or digging ditches here, don't get me wrong,
but like that's six six months of uh no more
real weekends.

So yeah, I'm ready to roll.

So how do you how do you map out your
training camp tour? Like who does that? Who's who's in
charge of me?

So you do it like you do it all yourself.

Yeah, So I like this week, for example, so I
decide where I'm gonna start, right Like, so sometimes.
Speaker 5 (19:53):
I'll start in the Midwest, sometimes I'll start in the South.

This year, I'm.

Starting on the West coast and usually that'll attend done.
Like you know, okay, Like where do I want to
be to begin and Seattle made sense this year.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
The team just got sold.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
They obviously it's one championship, so and then I.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Kind of work out from there. So it'll you know,
I'll start in Seattle and then you know, I'll hit
all the teams that are west of you know, and
that's like I guess the two western time zones right
like in the Pacific or the Mountain time zones, and
then and then kind of work east from there. So
what I'm trying to do now the next two days
(20:32):
is schedule that out. And where it gets tricky is
because they have all these mandated days off now you
kind of have to work around where teams are off,
you know, so that can be a little tricky too.
Just as far as like going from city to city,
and it's it's actually like more complicated when I'm in
the Midwest because I'm driving from city to city because those.

Cities are all, you know, three four hours apart. It's
it's much easier to drive because there are no.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Direct flights from those plays, you know, in those in
those areas. So yeah, it's complicated, but you know, I'm
looking forward to it. And then you know, once you
get home from it, you feel like you're really ready
for the season, which is great.

an alumni.

Well so I went to Penn State, but I was
So he's only forty two, and you look at the
numbers and you mentioned like multiple time pro Bowler, you know,
second team All Pro, he's got you know, close to
ninety career sacks.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
But played his entire career with Kansas City, and he's
one of those guys that I look at and go.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
The era that he played with the Chiefs is unrecognizable
now seeing what has happened over the past what seven
eight years now?
Speaker 3 (25:50):
He were really good. Yeah, yeah, like I feel like
he has.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
He has Hall of Fame credentials, Derek Johnson and from that,
that team has Hall of Fame credentials. I mean, there
was some really good football players that were on those
those teams. Tom but was on man, Justin Houston was
on the other side. Imagine that Justin Houston and Tom
Bahali as your ADG is.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
That's it's ridiculous, but it's kind of like it's almost
he was there. He just missed the really the Mahomes
era by a couple of years, because, yeah, those teams
were good because when Andy Reid got there, Look, they
were a disaster for a while and then Andy Reid
got there and sort of turned things around. Alex Smith
(26:38):
had a good run. But you go back and you look,
you go, well, he played his entire career with the
Kansas City Chiefs. But it's almost like two completely different
organizations we're talking about since Mahomes has got there in
this run that they've been on to where you almost
forget about great players, like they had really, really good players,
they just couldn't get over the hump in the postseason.

Once Mahomes got there, the conversation completely changed. It's kind
of wild man and he's only forty two years old,
walked away at thirty four, and it's just it seems
so long ago, and it wasn't that long ago that
Kansas City was one of these teams that could get
close and never get over the hump, like just couldn't
couldn't do it.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
I just couldn't do it close though they were close,
they were.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
We got some good news for you, I'll let you
get If anybody listens to this show, you know that
nobody has pounded the drum in support of Bronnie James
like one LeVar Arrington. I mean, nobody has come out
and said, give this guy a chance. He deserves an opportunity.
(27:44):
And so here we go. According to Dan Wike of
The Athletic, apparently the Lakers and the opinion of well,
you know, since Lebron's gone, it's going to be a
packaged deal. Wherever he goes, Bronni's going to go. Apparently
they might have some other plans for him. They view
him as a respected member of the team. They view
(28:06):
him as somebody who could compete for minutes. They view
him as somebody who was, you know, obviously well liked,
but well liked and has a work ethic that many
people have been complimentary of. And I look at this
and I go, I actually hope he sticks around, because
wherever lebron does go, it's going to be what one
two years tops, you know, something like that. Bronnie James
(28:29):
is hoping to stick around long term, and maybe he
just doesn't want to play in the shadow of his
dad any longer. So if he can carve his own
path with the Lakers at two point three million for
whatever they picked him up here, that's good news for
everybody whose supporter of the great Bronnie James.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
What about that far Okay, like, what about that you buying? That?
Is that big news? Are you buying that? No?
Speaker 4 (28:53):
I don't, but I mean I bought some of it.
I think there's probably a lot of true to how
they explain Bronnie James. I mean, why again, we talked
about earlier how Pickens gets twenty seven million for the.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
Franchise tag, and.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
That is a downgrade from what he could be getting
and receiving just based off of conduct issues. And so
every time you hear a story like this, you know,
you could say, Bronnie James will have all the reasons
in the world to be a diva, to be a
(29:34):
bad teammate. You know, he's the prince to the king,
so on and so forth. But that hasn't been the reports.
It sounds as though he's very well liked and respected
in the locker room. And again, when you bring value,
and I mentioned this, when you bring the type of
value to the locker room where it makes you better,
(29:58):
it makes the people around you better, it makes the
environment better. Then you're not always going to make the
end all tell all of a player. You're not going
to just base it off of their talent, because you
could be a talent of mass proportions. And if your

conduct is horrible and it isn't what it's supposed.

To be, they'll let you go. They will let you go.

We just mentioned Piggins that they that's heard on the
promo they were talking about Antonio Brown. Antonio Brown. I mean,
what would Joe pasate on?

With the brownie James saying, and I, you know, obviously
being sarcastic about the whole. Well, listen, there's you know, uh,
you know, people are fans of the guy. The one
thing I do respect about Bronnie James, and you kind
of alluded to it there is it doesn't feel like
there's any diva. It doesn't feel like you hear any
reports about him being like I could do whatever the
f I want because I'm Lebron's kid, and there never

has been. And he's been out here, you know, playing
you know, a high level or a high you know
high covered at a high level, whether it be high school,
whether it be you know, college, since he's gotten to
the NBA, you don't hear anything about him behaving like that.

Don't hear anything about him, and you don't really hear
anything from him.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
He seems like a good dude, Like he's not smart.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
It's a smart play raised well smart play, and so
I sometimes it's best to be seen not hurt.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
So I'm thinking, man, you know what, I kind of
hope he does stick around and just kind of does
his own thing.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
Do I think that's gonna happen. Probably not.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
It feels like maybe it's got to be a packaged deal,
and somebody's got to take in Bronni if they want
to bring lebron in. But the fact that the Lakers
are open to the idea of it, and the fact
that they're open to the idea of maintaining him in
the building and keeping the relationship going with Bronnie tells
me that guy's handled himself well. And and the fact
that he's earned the respect amidst all the chaos and
(33:17):
the circus that comes with his dad. You know, whoever's
fault you want to put that on. I good for him, man,
I hope it works out. He's handled himself well.

That's kind of I mean, listen, he's earned the opportunity
to play in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
That's one. He's got a name, he's got a brand.
That's two.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
And again, he doesn't create any waves, no ripples. He's
not you know, he's not a problem. So there's going
to be the opportunities for him. Now what that looks like,
will that dissipate or what have you? How much of
it has this been based upon lebron James, I think
(34:03):
is a tremendously relevant question, But I still ultimately believe
I do believe this. I'm not saying that's just said.
He's ultimately had to work hisself to where he's at. Yes,
he probably got more of a benefit of the doubt
(34:24):
based upon who his dad was and the organization that
took the chance, But.

If he did not.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
Bring that contribution to the team, I just don't see
it being just. In fact, I think it's harder to
justify keeping him. Maybe the bringing him in part is
one thing, Jonas, but then you can sit there and
you can say, well, we brought him in, it just
didn't work out, Like it just did not work. I
(34:52):
think it's harder to justify keeping a Bronni James that
isn't good enough to be kept. So for me, I
think there's some real validity to the fact that the
kid is actually good enough to be on an NBA roster.

That's just my take on You.

Could almost say it's it was easier for him to
get a foot in the door, but harder for him
to stay because getting in the connection his dad all that.
That's the easy part. The fact that he's here, they're
open to it. They picked up his contract. He's getting
this two point three million, I think says a lot
about you know, maybe the work he's done behind the scenes.

I did want to ask you this because we were
talking earlier about you know, Patrick Mahomes eyeing week one
as his return, talking to Yahoo's Sports and saying, look,
that's you know, that's the plan, and you know obviously
you know they're going to.

But I think it was you when we had a
conversation a couple of months back where I asked, Hey,
who's more likely to return week one? Patrick Mahomes or
Daniel Jones, And you kind of, in so many words,
said well, maybe both, because Daniel Jones feels like he
can do everything. Patrick Mahomes, like there's real optimism this
is going to happen. When when was the belief that

and and what was the what gave them the impression
that maybe he doesn't need to start the year on
the PubL list.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
With Mahomes, you're saying specifically.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Yeah, specifically, yeah, I mean I think it's like he's
been consistently way ahead to the point where in the spring,
I mean, you know what happens with guys like this
when they're coming back from those sorts of injuries. A
lot of times you have to like sort of hold
them back, you know, because they feel good and they
feel like they're ready to go.

And you know, I'm sure you.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Experienced that LeVar at some point with an injury where
like you know, like it's okay, I'm making great progress
and I want to keep taking steps.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
And you know, I kind of got the idea, like
I was talking to somebody, think.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
It was probably like middle of May, and you know,
he's still myhomes is still in whatever five months off
the injury at that.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
Point, and I said, I asked, like, is he gonna
be able to.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Do everything in training camp? And the answer I got
back with interesting, it was based on where he is. Definitely,
like he'll be able to do everything, definitely, but like
we may have to be careful with him, just because
once you tell him go, he's going to go. And
so you know, we need to be smart about that
(07:08):
part of it and like being judicious about how you know,
we handle this going forward, because you know, for us,
the priority is making sure that we have the best
version of him from September through February. You know, it's
not like, oh wow, how impressive was that in July?
(07:29):
It's how can we get there? So that's the balance.
I think. When I heard that, it's like, okay, like,
so you're now at the point where it's like like
he probably he probably thinks he a plan and game
right now, you know, but like you have to protect
him against himself. When you start to hear those things,
you know it's in a good place. And so, you know,
(07:50):
I think for a while now they felt like like
he would be you know, pretty whole physically, I mean
not all the way there, but pretty whole physically for
training camp.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
And that was set the stage for him to be
out there.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
We're going now there are other stages to this sort
of injury too, which you know, like that part of it,
it's you know, like kind of getting used to it
and getting used to having bodies around your legs.

close buddy of mine, and they were telling me how
phenomenal he's moving and how phenomenal he looks. And it
just seems as though you know at the quarterback's position

that you know you could potentially pull off. Now with
that being said, he is a runner. So what have
the conversations been about that, Abe? Because the one thing
about like what you mentioned and you you said that
I may have experienced.

I did feel good coming back from a torn moniscus injury,
and I did go out there too early and I
did slip and bone bruise my knee and.

Set myself back.

So that does really exist where you can set yourself
back by coming back a little bit too early in
this scenario, do you I think the biggest thing is
is how do you think they're handling or how you
think he feels about the idea of having to be
a less mobile quarterback based off of the idea of

what that could create in terms of danger for him.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Well, it's interesting because I had this conversation with him,
you know, last year, because he was turning thirty, right,
and I remember like asking him, like, do you feel
like you know you've got to adjust the way you play?
And his answer was really interesting. He said, like, I'm
always working on that, you know, and like his it's
(10:12):
it's fascinating.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
With him because like if you look like.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
His his the amount of times he runs, the frequency
of that, it goes up in the bigger games, and
he's really always been cognizant of that, you know, and
really smart about that. And like, I know, you know
the points of the year the games where I got
to just kind of keep a governor on that, and
I know where there are the situations where I take
(10:40):
the governor off. And we've seen it in the playoffs, right,
Like he very clearly like is more aggressive as a
runner in the playoffs, which changes the dynamic a little
bit for everyone around him. So it's something like I
think he's always been cognizant of I think it's something
he's always working on. And you know, the cool thing is,
like I thinks as the years have gone on, you know,

and he's had a bunch of like lower leg injuries,
and there was some concern over that too, but it's
forced him to think about these things. And so you know,
I always use Ben Roethlisberger as the example and the
reason why. I remember when Todd Haley got there, and
that was in I think two thousand, I want to
say it was like two thousand and thirteen, maybe twenty twelve,

somewhere in there. But when Todd Haley got there as
the offensive.

Coordinator for for Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Basically, Haley's point to Ben was, look like, you know,
you're deeper into your career now, just let us.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Make this easier on you.

You know.

And you got Antonio Brown, and you got Mike Wallace
and you got Emmanuel Sanders. Let us take that weight
off of you. You don't need to be superman all
the time. And you know, Ben, I think effectively almost
created a second phase of his career.

And if you look like he was putting.

Himself at risk a whole lot less, you know, over
the back half of his career. So I think that's
something a lot of quarterbacks I just have to consider.
It's something I know Josh Allen has to consider now,
you know. And I think the good news for for
chief Stands and looking at this is that it's something
that I think Patrick has always been cognizant of, and

I think he'll be able to adjust that as he
needs to coming off the knee.

gone conclusion, but it does feel like it's turning that
way for sure. And I think, like the the interesting
part about this for me is going to be like
what the plan.

And I mentioned this a few different places now, but
like I had a conversation with Eric Weddle about this.
A couple of our last months when the news first
when when when when when the mcaffee thing happened, and
you know, like the the news start news cycle started
up on the idea that Aaron Donald could come back
after the Miles Garrett trade, and you know, I thought,

I think what was was really interesting about what Eric
said to me was like, you know, when he first
came back and he had been out for two years, right,
so he comes back to that playoff run and the
idea was, Okay, I'm gonna play in the nickel, but.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
They weren't such dire straits.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
And safety that within a week he became a full
time player. And he told me a story about Raheem
and Sean coming over to him in a practice and saying, okay,
well you're full code now, right.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
He's like what?
Speaker 2 (13:48):
And then he wound up playing every snap in the
divisional round, you know, and he he wound up hurting
his hamstring against the Niners in the championship game and
tearing his pack against the Bengals the Super Bowl, And
like EASi, he feels still feel those injuries, you know,
five years later, and you know it's it's just, you know,
(14:08):
I think the interesting thing about the Donald situation. That's
different than that, right is, yes, you have to consider
all those things, but Wedell was there in an emergency situation,
and that's not what this is for the Rams. Like
if Donald is back, then you know we're talking about
they have Kelbe Turner, they have Brandon Fisk, they have
(14:28):
Puna Ford, they have Ty Hamilton, and they drafted last year,
like they have real depth to detackle, so they don't
have to play him sixty or seventy plays a snaps
a game the way they did with Weddell during that
Super Bowl run. So like, okay, if you can come
in and you can manage it that way, that could
be a real nightmare for offenses who have to block
(14:51):
all those big men and then all of a sudden,
third down, here comes Aaron Donald, you know, you know,
And then I think there's the other piece of it,
which is like what's the best plan? Is the best
plan to put him through a full training camp? And
you know, then you get to the you know, you
get to the regular season and you're playing him on
(15:11):
a limited basis? Is the best plan to have like
a wink wink deal and you sign him in October
and then you ramp them up, and you have them
for a Super Bowl run. I think that's probably the
most interesting piece now is how they formulate that plan.

We were talking about Pickens earlier and him being on
the franchise tag, them keeping him on on the tag. Now,
you can't negotiate or redo or sign a long term
extension during regular season once that tag is signed, so
he's going to have to go.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Through the entire year.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
I believe that whole situation takes place next next offseason.
But you can, and however, make sure that that player
knows that you have every intentions of extending them or
creating a new contract for that player. Jonas seems to
(16:13):
think this is it. It's a one and done for Pickens.
I'm not certain of that. I think he was quiet
enough last year as a Dallas cowboyn and honestly, if
we're being honest, earlier part of the year, he was
the best receiver on the team, maybe the best receiver
and all of pro football. In the conversation now kind
(16:33):
of tailed off at the end, But how do you
see this situation kind of developing in Dallas with Pickens?
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Yeah, I think the best way to describe this is like,
you know, I think it's kind of that was great.
We want to see more, you know, And like Pickens'
history was checkered enough at Georgia that it helped the
contribute and following in the draft. Talented as he is,
I don't think anybody ever question his talent.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
And then, you know, after three.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Years, when Mike Tomlin gives up on a guy for
character reasons, like that's always.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
Been like a red flag for me, you know, like when.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
He was willing to walk away from Antonio Brown or
Mike Wallace or Le'Veon Bell, Like when he's willing to
walk away from.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
A guy, like he's as good at managing.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Personalities as anybody I've ever seen.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
You know, and being able to allowing.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
The personnel department to cast a wide net because he
can handle people. And so when when the Steelers with Mike,
when Mike.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
Tomlin was the coach, come to a decision.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
That, yeah, that's it. That's a pretty serious red flag.
Speaker 5 (17:44):
So you have all that history there, you know, and
then he comes in.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
And he's arguably what the second or third best receiver
in all of football last year, right, like I think
maybe behind of the guys last year, maybe behind Chase
and JSN and Pooka Nakua.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
He's somewhere in there.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
And did a great job when when when when Ceedee
Lamb was hurt and so and he was he was
a good citizen too. So, like I think, as much
as anything else, it's like, before we commit the truly
big money.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
To you, we need to see it again, you.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Know, And the franchise tag effectively allowed them to do that. Now,
the flip side is that, like you know, it's going
to be more expensive to tag him again next year
if you want to do that. And then if you
tag him again next year, then he's got.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
A ton of leverage on the negotiation for a long
term deal.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
If you don't tag him and he walks us straight
in the near and has another year like he had,
well then he's a you know, going to be a
very very expensive free agent. So no matter how you
slice this, there's great opportunity there for George Pickens.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
But I mean, I think you know, he also made
his bed.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Just as far as you know the reasons why they're
not signing him to a long.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Term deal now, Albert Brier, before I let you go,
a is this sort of the and I don't know,
maybe last weekend was, but is this the final weekend
of quote unquote freedom for you before you start the
training camp tours and all that.

Yeah, yeah, so I'll be I'll be going out west.

I think I think it gonna be flight on a
flight to seat all week from Sunday. So whenever that is,
we're geared up and ready to go. It's hard to
believe it's here.

Starting on the West coast and usually that'll attend done.
Like you know, okay, Like where do I want to
be to begin and Seattle made sense this year.

The team just got sold.

They obviously it's one championship, so and then I.

Kind of work out from there. So it'll you know,
I'll start in Seattle and then you know, I'll hit
all the teams that are west of you know, and
that's like I guess the two western time zones right
like in the Pacific or the Mountain time zones, and
then and then kind of work east from there. So
what I'm trying to do now the next two days

is schedule that out. And where it gets tricky is
because they have all these mandated days off now you
kind of have to work around where teams are off,
you know, so that can be a little tricky too.
Just as far as like going from city to city,
and it's it's actually like more complicated when I'm in
the Midwest because I'm driving from city to city because those.

Cities are all, you know, three four hours apart. It's
it's much easier to drive because there are no.

Direct flights from those plays, you know, in those in
those areas. So yeah, it's complicated, but you know, I'm
looking forward to it. And then you know, once you
get home from it, you feel like you're really ready
for the season, which is great.

ninety career sacks.

But played his entire career with Kansas City, and he's
one of those guys that I look at and go.

The era that he played with the Chiefs is unrecognizable
now seeing what has happened over the past what seven
eight years now?
Speaker 3 (25:50):
He were really good. Yeah, yeah, like I feel like
he has.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
He has Hall of Fame credentials, Derek Johnson and from that,
that team has Hall of Fame credentials. I mean, there
was some really good football players that were on those
those teams. Tom but was on man, Justin Houston was
on the other side. Imagine that Justin Houston and Tom
Bahali as your ADG is.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
That's it's ridiculous, but it's kind of like it's almost
he was there. He just missed the really the Mahomes
era by a couple of years, because, yeah, those teams
were good because when Andy Reid got there, Look, they
were a disaster for a while and then Andy Reid
got there and sort of turned things around. Alex Smith
(26:38):
had a good run. But you go back and you look,
you go, well, he played his entire career with the
Kansas City Chiefs. But it's almost like two completely different
organizations we're talking about since Mahomes has got there in
this run that they've been on to where you almost
forget about great players, like they had really, really good players,
they just couldn't get over the hump in the postseason.

Once Mahomes got there, the conversation completely changed. It's kind
of wild man and he's only forty two years old,
walked away at thirty four, and it's just it seems
so long ago, and it wasn't that long ago that
Kansas City was one of these teams that could get
close and never get over the hump, like just couldn't
couldn't do it.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
I just couldn't do it close though they were close,
they were.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
We got some good news for you, I'll let you
get If anybody listens to this show, you know that
nobody has pounded the drum in support of Bronnie James
like one LeVar Arrington. I mean, nobody has come out
and said, give this guy a chance. He deserves an opportunity.
(27:44):
And so here we go. According to Dan Wike of
The Athletic, apparently the Lakers and the opinion of well,
you know, since Lebron's gone, it's going to be a
packaged deal. Wherever he goes, Bronni's going to go. Apparently
they might have some other plans for him. They view
him as a respected member of the team. They view
(28:06):
him as somebody who could compete for minutes. They view
him as somebody who was, you know, obviously well liked,
but well liked and has a work ethic that many
people have been complimentary of. And I look at this
and I go, I actually hope he sticks around, because
wherever lebron does go, it's going to be what one
two years tops, you know, something like that. Bronnie James
(28:29):
is hoping to stick around long term, and maybe he
just doesn't want to play in the shadow of his
dad any longer. So if he can carve his own
path with the Lakers at two point three million for
whatever they picked him up here, that's good news for
everybody whose supporter of the great Bronnie James.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
What about that far Okay, like, what about that you buying? That?
Is that big news? Are you buying that? No?
Speaker 4 (28:53):
I don't, but I mean I bought some of it.
I think there's probably a lot of true to how
they explain Bronnie James. I mean, why again, we talked
about earlier how Pickens gets twenty seven million for the.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
Franchise tag, and.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
That is a downgrade from what he could be getting
and receiving just based off of conduct issues. And so
every time you hear a story like this, you know,
you could say, Bronnie James will have all the reasons
in the world to be a diva, to be a

bad teammate. You know, he's the prince to the king,
so on and so forth. But that hasn't been the reports.
It sounds as though he's very well liked and respected
in the locker room. And again, when you bring value,
and I mentioned this, when you bring the type of
value to the locker room where it makes you better,

it makes the people around you better, it makes the
environment better. Then you're not always going to make the
end all tell all of a player. You're not going
to just base it off of their talent, because you
could be a talent of mass proportions. And if your

conduct is horrible and it isn't what it's supposed.

To be, they'll let you go. They will let you go.

We just mentioned Piggins that they that's heard on the
promo they were talking about Antonio Brown. Antonio Brown. I mean,

you know, people are fans of the guy. The one
thing I do respect about Bronnie James, and you kind
of alluded to it there is it doesn't feel like
there's any diva. It doesn't feel like you hear any
reports about him being like I could do whatever the
f I want because I'm Lebron's kid, and there never

has been. And he's been out here, you know, playing
you know, a high level or a high you know
high covered at a high level, whether it be high school,
whether it be you know, college, since he's gotten to
the NBA, you don't hear anything about him behaving like that.

anything from him.

He seems like a good dude, Like he's not smart.

to bring lebron in. But the fact that the Lakers

that they're open to the idea of maintaining him in
the building and keeping the relationship going with Bronnie tells
me that guy's handled himself well. And and the fact
that he's earned the respect amidst all the chaos and

the circus that comes with his dad. You know, whoever's
fault you want to put that on. I good for him, man,
I hope it works out. He's handled himself well.

That's kind of I mean, listen, he's earned the opportunity
to play in the NBA.

And again, he doesn't create any waves, no ripples. He's
not you know, he's not a problem. So there's going
to be the opportunities for him. Now what that looks like,
will that dissipate or what have you? How much of
it has this been based upon lebron James, I think

is a tremendously relevant question, But I still ultimately believe
I do believe this. I'm not saying that's just said.
He's ultimately had to work hisself to where he's at. Yes,
he probably got more of a benefit of the doubt

based upon who his dad was and the organization that
took the chance, But.

Bring that contribution to the team, I just don't see
it being just. In fact, I think it's harder to
justify keeping him. Maybe the bringing him in part is
one thing, Jonas, but then you can sit there and
you can say, well, we brought him in, it just
didn't work out, Like it just did not work. I

think it's harder to justify keeping a Bronni James that
isn't good enough to be kept. So for me, I
think there's some real validity to the fact that the
kid is actually good enough to be on an NBA roster.

That's just my take on You.

Could almost say it's it was easier for him to
get a foot in the door, but harder for him
to stay because getting in the connection his dad all that.
That's the easy part. The fact that he's here, they're
open to it. They picked up his contract. He's getting
this two point three million, I think says a lot
about you know, maybe the work he's done behind the scenes.

Couple of fun facts before we run out here. Jamal's
mom had him at sixteen years old, so there's a
photo with her in there too. And Jamal is the
youngest to play for Spain. He was first debut on
the team when he was only fifteen.
