is up on Game and it's Fox Sports Radio. You

we are going to jump into talking preseason. We will
also get to the Jaden Daniels conversation war with his

it opened on Thursday. There's six games so far and
ran through the weekend. Running through the weekend, most teams
they sat their starters, so the spotlight wasn't on guys
who have played. It was on rookies who have been drafted,
bubble guys, so on, so forth. The Cardinals, their number

three overall, picked Jeremiah Love. He had eleven carries for
fifty eight yards five point three yards per carry average,
cut three catches, and he had a run where he
hurdled a defender and maybe erasing any doubt as to
why he was drafted and what he'll look like as

as a starter. All right. They had a also a
lineman get injured, second round guard Chase how you say
his name? There you go, Chase Besantes. He was carded
off and it was labeled as not good. Patriots got
got into their game. Jam Miller Alabama. He did he

did well. Fourteen cares for fifty five yards. Terrell Jennings hit.
You know he's on ir so this could be a
great situation for Jim the Bucks undrafted rookie aiden guards.
He picked off Bailey's affy he returned to forty seven
yards for a touchdown. Defense and Cashier is how he

recovered a fumble in that game. Colts, how you say
his name Boucher? I want to say Bryce Boucher. He
had three tackles, look pretty impressive in the game. Blake
Miller seventeenth overall pick.

That's with a strong start at the lineman position at
you know, the big boy, biggin right tackle. I want
to ask you guys this, all right, we hear the stats,
We hear about the guys who get in and get
some some good burn and good good tape, and we
always hear the saying like, I gotta get more tape,

I gotta get more film. How important is the preseason
for racking up good film? I know you talked about
earlier TJ. You don't care what game it is. You
want to show, show out and show that you can
play well. How important and is getting preseason film for
some of these guys.

Man, Listen, when you're drafted outside of the first three
four rounds very important. If you want to stand the league,
you draft the first, second, third round. It's important, but
it really ain't. You remember when the best receiver in
the league first preseason game dropped a couple of balls

and they were saying, oh.

I don't know if the Bengals made the right decision
drafting Jamar Chase. He can't catch the ball in the
pre im like this is the preseason. He a top
five pick, he gonna be all right and look at
him now. But you do that as a sixth round pick,
you might get cut. And so when you are a

late round draft pick, they not preseason games, they regular
season games. Your life is on the line, your NFL life. Oh,
and you have to approach it as such, and you
have to understand what position you are in on that team,
you're standing on that team, the guys you're competing with,

how many guys they gonna keep? Because that's just what
it comes down to. And so for me, anything I do,
I want to do well at it. I may not
want to play a preseason game when I'm a starter,
but I don't want to go out there and play bad.

Who does? And like no, but anybody that has that mentality,
like I don't even want you around me, let alone
on my team. Like anything we do we do to
be the best. We ain't doing it to have step
and be average. Like if we're gonna compete at one thing,
we're gonna compete at everything. And so that should be

the mentality that you have. But in this game of football,
every year, it's a group of young men coming to
try to take a somebody's spot. They're trying to take
somebody's spot, and the only way you can do that
is by putting the best foot forward practice and then
you transfer that practice into the game. Once you start

doing that, these coaches notice that Plex you I don't
know if you've ever done a LeVar, but Plex, you
sat in staff meetings. You know me and you both
thought we wanted the coach, and then we realized like, nah,
tokay's something we want to do. But when these young
players start to perform well, oh, they get brought up
in these staff meetings like, oh, so and so absolutely
doing well the last couple of practice, Let's see how

he does in this first preseason game, and so it matters.

Yeah, it definitely really does.
Speaker 2 (05:42):

I think I'm sensing like a shift or a change
within the preseason because, uh, you know, I believe that
Sean McVeigh came up with this model that he didn't
want to play any of his players in the preseason.
And now you look at what's going on across the league.
How many starting quarterbacks are playing like today tomorrow, Kylin, Murray, Jackson, Dark,

Josh Allen, Deshaun Watson. Uh, these quarterbacks weren't playing in
the preseason. Uh, you know, four or five years ago.
But I think the coaches are really starting to understand
that we need our we need our ones to get
some reps going into the going into the season if
we want to get off to a good start. You
(06:27):
know what, I want to do some research on how
many teams in the last five to ten years have
reached the Super Bowl or won the Super Bowl, if
they're if they're starting, if their starters did not play
in the preseason at all. I don't want to know
that number because I think there's a change going that
(06:47):
as you can see right now with the ones that
are playing in these opening preseason games today and tomorrow.

M getting hurt in the game is pretty bad. Man.
Hurt and losing your season in a preseason game is crazy.
That's crazy work. Let me let me throw this one
out at you, guys. You talked about the experiences being
different TJ. From being a undrafted to being a drafted

to a money guy and a starter to a guy
that's fighting for a roster spot. What talk to me
about you guys? Just give me what gets you cut
off the field. You know, we we as fans, we
we as the media. We watch what they're doing on
the field. We watched the ball. Did they make the catch? Da?
But behind the scenes, when you guys say that, there's

just as many things behind the scenes that could lead
to a guy getting cut or potentially making it onto
the team and getting that opportunity. What what are some
of those things that maybe behind the scenes the people
don't realize play a major part and them staying on
the roster.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Man, listen, if you want of these guys that's been drafted,
I will say in the third round or worse, fifth,
sixth and seven being late. I mean I've seen guys
be late to like walk through or like treatment and
you would get out on the football fielding training camp.
You'd be like, we're so and so they was like,
oh man, they cut like wow, that was like he

was late. So so you don't have the same mount
of rope if you if you're a guy that has
not been drafted high because you you need to be
on time to everything. I'm talking about getting there early.
So don't even put yourself in a position to, you know,
(08:38):
to be late, because they're pretty much looking at you.

They say, Man, to be early, it's to be on time. Right,
to be on time, it's to be late. To be late,
it's to be forgotten. Oh wow, And that's what's gonna happen.
You're gonna be forgotten. And this is what happens though,
Plex You I'm hanging with mister Plexico burs and Flex

comes in because no, no, no, and Plex comes in
late and I'm late with us. Plex cool, my ass,
Oh good to go, Plexico is good. I'm gone, And
that's what happens. That's what happens. LeVar is, I'm hanging
with LeVar and Plexico and they come in. We all

come in late. They good, I'm out of there, and
you're sitting here and like, wait, we all was late.

You know as well, guys. It applies to being hurt.
It's the same. I would say, it's the same exact narrative.
One of the things about.

I'm not gonna lie to LeVar with with the hurt
thing that that matters a lot. But I will say this,
when I look back at my career, I was hurt
here and there in my first two years, and then
my third season, I missed every game I played. I
was active the last game, but I was hurt. I
had tore my hamstring twice that year, and Marvin was

straight up, you get hurt again, we gotta let you.
You're not gonna make the scene. I'm like, I gotta
figure something out.

Getting hurt is man. It's probably the biggest from my experience,
Like just kind of how I internalized it during my
time in the league was man if a dude was
really good but was always in the training room and
was always dealing with injury.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
When you think about it, though, a lot of the
injuries when guys is constantly in the training it's soft tissue, bros. Hamstring, quad. Man.
Once I figure that out, I never had a muscle
injury the rest of my I don't undermand these dudes
that be having these muscle injuries. Man, I had TJ Man,
I'm gonna get you right, bro, like, because I for
(10:59):
year I heard it, second year I had it, third
year I had it. Out of there, started doing a
certain type of training, never had it again. And is
that a coincidence or not, I don't know, but I
never had a muscle injury again.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
Yeah, with those young guys getting hurt in training camp, Man,
it's one of those things where we have witnessed certain players,
certain young players that would have made the football team
if it wasn't for a hamstring or a calf or
you know, growing whatever the case may be. And like
Lavoss said, Man, that's one of the biggest things for
these young players, especially when they get the opportunity to

prove theyself and you know, you get a hamstring you're
out four or five to six weeks. The team doesn't
have time to you know, let your forgot allow you
to get healthy so they can evaluate you. And that's
the messed up part about training count. When these young
guys get hurt in practice.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Wow, that's that's a reality. And those are things you
got to look for. So when you hear these injury
lists and stuff like that, or you hear it like
after the first go around and guy's not there, might
not even be because of what they did on the field.
It could be something that they did off of it.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
You know, it's off the field, they drinking something, and
then you think you about to go camp? Is so easy?
Now they be in camp two weeks.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
How long was y'all, Ricky training camp your first year?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Like six weeks?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Bro? Like five weeks minimum a month using camp two weeks.
It's just a different day in time, like this show
life going out drinking and not what you think gonna happen.
When you get a practice, you're gonna be dehydrated and
then your muscle's gonna pay the price for that. You're
gonna pay the price, yep, sitting at home. I'm better

than him, know you ain't. You know, that's what everybody
they be sitting at home. Man. I was in camp
with SO and so bro I was killing I'm way
better than Buddy Bro. No, you aren't. You're at home
and he's on TV. You're not better than him.

war of words taking place. His representation reached out to
the University LSU and let them know that they needed

to stop using his name, his image, and his likeness,
feeling disrespected over the fact that they allowed a player
to war his number five jersey and wasn't basically honoring him. Now,
there's only been one jersey retired in the history of

the school, and that's Billy Cannon from nineteen fifty nine.
Joe Burrow's name has been brought up and put into
the conversations, but number nine isn't retired either, but it
just hasn't been issued out. So Fellas, I don't know
if this is Is this a conversation where we make

the comparable of both both guys won of heisman, won
a national title? Didn't Joe Burrow win it all? Didn't
they win it all?

Yeah? But is there even like should there be a
comparable here? Both of them were transfers, so we can't say, oh, well,
he was homegrown there and ended up being what he
was one transfer. They both transferred from other schools to

where where does this come from?

Where where with the idea of focusing in on the
fact that a defensive player, or even if it was
an offensive player, that somebody's wearing the jersey, Where where

think you have an idea of what the origin of

didn't do.

A I'm assuming Jane Daniels was told that his number
five jersey would not be worn because there's no way.

But that's that's an assumption, right because if they yeah,
the better way of doing it is Again, I think
it comes down to if somebody's not going to if
the jersey's not in circulation, it should be there should
be some type of a ceremony to say that the
jersey is out of circulation, like get you're retired, or
it's out of circulation like that. Should it should have
been officially done so it's understood.

This is the thing when you go to a school LSU, Alabama,
Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon. I ain't throw Penn State in there, Michigan, USC,
Are you not getting the top recruits every single year?

Every year you getting top recruits? These kids, won't they number?
I don't believe in college numbers should be retired because
there's just too many. You just can't do it. It
should be a badge and honor to wear a legendary
number like USC with number fifty five, like Penn State
with number eleven, or as you would say, Stick City.

So when when you're LSU, and like you said, only
Billy Cannon's number is retired, Joe Burrow's number looked like
it may be retired because nobody has worn number nine
since he's left. But I do believe if the right
recruit comes along, oh they get number nine.

And so don't you believe that that's why they keep
it from retirement.

I mean, if we're being honest, if you're going to
retire the number, this is the biggest issue here, right,
If you're going to retire the number, retire the number,

should be I agree already. You're sending the clear message.
If the number is not retired, retired you are allowed

If your son, your son's you two is a top
ten recruit in the country and he's worn a number
pretty much the entirety of his life, and a school's
recruiting and he can't wear that number. He not going

He's not going to that school over a number. So
if you're a school, I'm not losing a kid I
feel can help our program in a major way over
a number.

one recruit has come to LSU and asked for the
number nine.

You think that it's possible, but number Like, to me
when I look at it, number nine just isn't a
popular number. Like the kids won't I'm coaching football. They
don't want number nine, really, yeah, number they want like
number one, they want one, two, zero. A lot of
dudes do want number zero. They do. They want number zero,

But we had a multiple people want number two. I
mean number one, two, three, four, five, seven, eight, eleven, eighteen.
Those are the numbers that the young kids wanted more
than anything, And it's just me coaching this year. It

was like multiple people wanted those numbers, but only one
kid won a number nine.

They resistant against six and nine and all's nine is
is not on its ass and six is on its ass.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Like it's so, I just said, Jake Daniels. Back to
Jake Daniels, Right, Okay, he has a right to feel
how he feels. He feels disrespected. You had that right too.
I wouldn't feel disrespected over a number because I know
DJ picking that I don't know him, well, I just
met him a few times. He's a top recruit. The

kid gonna be in the National Football League here very soon.
And that's just a relationship from two guys at a
premier school that no way you can repair that. You

you said that no college numbers have be retired. But
I do agree with every Hosmital Trophy, that player that
wins the Hosband Trophy, their numbers should be retired. I really,
because when it's the highest honor of any college football player.

you're at a premier school, you're gonna start running out
of some numbers that these kids want. You're gonna lose kids.

take it and take advantage of the fact that the
number is still in rotation, that the number is still
going to be worn, instead of complaining about people wearing it,
create something like create a five legacy, like creator what's that.

You played three years at Penn State? Three years she
was three years at Michigan State.

And so I just feel like this could have been
handled so much better. Number one, keep it private and
we want our Heisman trophy back, We want this. Don't
use my name, image, likeness.

I just think it's venomous, not necessary in this scenario,
in my estimation, not necessary at all. Build off of it, right,
because my whole thing is this. If you ask, Okay,
the career I had, would I have wanted my jersey retired?
And I would say absolutely not, because at the end

of the day what I did want. And again I
told the stories toward the story yesterday, my number wasn't
being worn by any defenders when I left, nobody wore
eleven on defense. Well, one kid did a safety ward,
a safety ward, and I didn't care he wore a number,

I didn't really care. I didn't start caring about the
legacy of the number until I gave it to Navarro.
When I gave the number to Navarro to wear, to
rebrand him and paint him in a different light, in
a positive way, and see him for who he is,
the player is, that was when the number started mattering

to me. But again, if the number is not retired,
you shouldn't be offended by anyone who wears number, even
if they're not a fan of you. What you should
do is build the number's brand as it applies to you.
That's it, like you don't have as long as LSU
is willing to support you in those endeavors, which speaks

to your point. TJ right, don't ruin the relationship, double
down on it, leverage it like people wear five, but
people will know that five is number that jayde and
Daniels made relevant at LSU. Otherwise, if it's retired, people
just forget about it. I'm sorry. Name the people that
have their numbers retired. I would say Archie Griffin might

be the only name. If if you said name dudes
numbers that you know are retired or the number isn't
in circulation, people forget about you after a couple of years.
Like bottom line is, I don't care how good you are.
People forget about you. So if your number is not
in circulation and it's retired, like I know, okay, it's
it's prominently displayed. If you go to USC you could

see the numbers that are retired, pictures all it's all
prominently displayed. People still forget about you, but you know what,
they don't forget the person who just did it. So
if you didn't know that Michael Parsons Ward Levin at
Penn State, I bet you a lot of people know
that Abdul Carter Ward at Penn State. It's like you
create the legacy. It creates a standard, and then it

carries itself. You don't have to a lot of people
that know mic oh or no, I do. Don't even
remember me, don't don't even know that I ever went
to Penn State, don't even know who I am, my existence.
But you know what, they know the number, They know
the number. So to me, I feel like for him
in this scenario, take a negative and turn it into
a positive. Have a conversation with the university, tell them

that your number matters to you, and that you you
would like to use it in this manner and in
this way, and go from there to enterprise it. Turn
this into an opportunity to make it into a business,
make those number fives matter, make the ones who wear it,
make them, make them know that this is a number
that is special to this university. So that's how I

think I would handle it. And it's not too late
for them to like kind of map this whole thing out.
I hope that they do, because he's a great player
for them and a great program.

what's the meal that you you you love the most? Pregame?

Oh? Man, For me, it always depending on what time
I was playing, but usually every night before the game
it was just fish rising potatoes.

If we go out to eat, you know, if we
go to a restaurant, then whatever, you know, I like

so I I stop eating before games. The morning of
I would just I would get too to go boxes
of fruit, and once a halftime came, you know that
all that anxiousness is gone, and so then i'd be hungry.
I just eat all the fruit at halftime.

Different, dude, bro I eat a steak and a baked potato.

we are going to jump into talking preseason. We will
also get to the Jaden Daniels conversation war with his
own school over the number. We'll we'll check in on

all of that. All right, Fellas the preseason week one,
it opened on Thursday. There's six games so far and
ran through the weekend. Running through the weekend, most teams
they sat their starters, so the spotlight wasn't on guys
who have played. It was on rookies who have been drafted,
bubble guys, so on, so forth. The Cardinals, their number
(01:06):
three overall, picked Jeremiah Love. He had eleven carries for
fifty eight yards five point three yards per carry average,
cut three catches, and he had a run where he
hurdled a defender and maybe erasing any doubt as to
why he was drafted and what he'll look like as
(01:27):
as a starter. All right. They had a also a
lineman get injured, second round guard Chase how you say
his name? There you go, Chase Besantes. He was carded
off and it was labeled as not good. Patriots got
got into their game. Jam Miller Alabama. He did he
(01:50):
did well. Fourteen cares for fifty five yards. Terrell Jennings hit.
You know he's on ir so this could be a
great situation for Jim the Bucks undrafted rookie aiden guards.
He picked off Bailey's affy he returned to forty seven
yards for a touchdown. Defense and Cashier is how he

recovered a fumble in that game. Colts, how you say
his name Boucher? I want to say Bryce Boucher. He
had three tackles, look pretty impressive in the game. Blake
Miller seventeenth overall pick.

He debuted.

That's with a strong start at the lineman position at
you know, the big boy, biggin right tackle. I want
to ask you guys this, all right, we hear the stats,
We hear about the guys who get in and get
some some good burn and good good tape, and we
always hear the saying like, I gotta get more tape,
(02:45):
I gotta get more film. How important is the preseason
for racking up good film? I know you talked about
earlier TJ. You don't care what game it is. You
want to show, show out and show that you can
play well. How important and is getting preseason film for
some of these guys.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Man, Listen, when you're drafted outside of the first three
four rounds very important. If you want to stand the league,
you draft the first, second, third round. It's important, but
it really ain't. You remember when the best receiver in
the league first preseason game dropped a couple of balls
(03:26):
and they were saying, oh.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
I don't know if the Bengals made the right decision
drafting Jamar Chase. He can't catch the ball in the
pre im like this is the preseason. He a top
five pick, he gonna be all right and look at
him now. But you do that as a sixth round pick,
you might get cut. And so when you are a
(03:49):
late round draft pick, they not preseason games, they regular
season games. Your life is on the line, your NFL life. Oh,
and you have to approach it as such, and you
have to understand what position you are in on that team,
you're standing on that team, the guys you're competing with,
(04:12):
how many guys they gonna keep? Because that's just what
it comes down to. And so for me, anything I do,
I want to do well at it. I may not
want to play a preseason game when I'm a starter,
but I don't want to go out there and play bad.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Who does? And like no, but anybody that has that mentality,
like I don't even want you around me, let alone
on my team. Like anything we do we do to
be the best. We ain't doing it to have step
and be average. Like if we're gonna compete at one thing,
we're gonna compete at everything. And so that should be
(04:51):
the mentality that you have. But in this game of football,
every year, it's a group of young men coming to
try to take a somebody's spot. They're trying to take
somebody's spot, and the only way you can do that
is by putting the best foot forward practice and then
you transfer that practice into the game. Once you start
(05:14):
doing that, these coaches notice that Plex you I don't
know if you've ever done a LeVar, but Plex, you
sat in staff meetings. You know me and you both
thought we wanted the coach, and then we realized like, nah,
tokay's something we want to do. But when these young
players start to perform well, oh, they get brought up
in these staff meetings like, oh, so and so absolutely
doing well the last couple of practice, Let's see how
(05:36):
he does in this first preseason game, and so it matters.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Yeah, it definitely really does.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Man.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
I think I'm sensing like a shift or a change
within the preseason because, uh, you know, I believe that
Sean McVeigh came up with this model that he didn't
want to play any of his players in the preseason.
And now you look at what's going on across the league.
How many starting quarterbacks are playing like today tomorrow, Kylin, Murray, Jackson, Dark,
(06:05):
Josh Allen, Deshaun Watson. Uh, these quarterbacks weren't playing in
the preseason. Uh, you know, four or five years ago.
But I think the coaches are really starting to understand
that we need our we need our ones to get
some reps going into the going into the season if
we want to get off to a good start. You
(06:27):
know what, I want to do some research on how
many teams in the last five to ten years have
reached the Super Bowl or won the Super Bowl, if
they're if they're starting, if their starters did not play
in the preseason at all. I don't want to know
that number because I think there's a change going that
(06:47):
as you can see right now with the ones that
are playing in these opening preseason games today and tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
M getting hurt in the game is pretty bad. Man.
Hurt and losing your season in a preseason game is crazy.
That's crazy work. Let me let me throw this one
out at you, guys. You talked about the experiences being
different TJ. From being a undrafted to being a drafted
(07:16):
to a money guy and a starter to a guy
that's fighting for a roster spot. What talk to me
about you guys? Just give me what gets you cut
off the field. You know, we we as fans, we
we as the media. We watch what they're doing on
the field. We watched the ball. Did they make the catch? Da?
But behind the scenes, when you guys say that, there's
(07:40):
just as many things behind the scenes that could lead
to a guy getting cut or potentially making it onto
the team and getting that opportunity. What what are some
of those things that maybe behind the scenes the people
don't realize play a major part and them staying on
the roster.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Man, listen, if you want of these guys that's been drafted,
I will say in the third round or worse, fifth,
sixth and seven being late. I mean I've seen guys
be late to like walk through or like treatment and
you would get out on the football fielding training camp.
You'd be like, we're so and so they was like,
oh man, they cut like wow, that was like he
(08:18):
was late. So so you don't have the same mount
of rope if you if you're a guy that has
not been drafted high because you you need to be
on time to everything. I'm talking about getting there early.
So don't even put yourself in a position to, you know,
(08:38):
to be late, because they're pretty much looking at you.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
They say, Man, to be early, it's to be on time. Right,
to be on time, it's to be late. To be late,
it's to be forgotten. Oh wow, And that's what's gonna happen.
You're gonna be forgotten. And this is what happens though,
Plex You I'm hanging with mister Plexico burs and Flex
(09:08):
comes in because no, no, no, and Plex comes in
late and I'm late with us. Plex cool, my ass,
Oh good to go, Plexico is good. I'm gone, And
that's what happens. That's what happens. LeVar is, I'm hanging
with LeVar and Plexico and they come in. We all
(09:30):
come in late. They good, I'm out of there, and
you're sitting here and like, wait, we all was late.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
You know as well, guys. It applies to being hurt.
It's the same. I would say, it's the same exact narrative.
One of the things about.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
I'm not gonna lie to LeVar with with the hurt
thing that that matters a lot. But I will say this,
when I look back at my career, I was hurt
here and there in my first two years, and then
my third season, I missed every game I played. I
was active the last game, but I was hurt. I
had tore my hamstring twice that year, and Marvin was
(10:13):
straight up, you get hurt again, we gotta let you.
You're not gonna make the scene. I'm like, I gotta
figure something out.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Getting hurt is man. It's probably the biggest from my experience,
Like just kind of how I internalized it during my
time in the league was man if a dude was
really good but was always in the training room and
was always dealing with injury.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
When you think about it, though, a lot of the
injuries when guys is constantly in the training it's soft tissue, bros. Hamstring, quad. Man.
Once I figure that out, I never had a muscle
injury the rest of my I don't undermand these dudes
that be having these muscle injuries. Man, I had TJ Man,
I'm gonna get you right, bro, like, because I for
(10:59):
year I heard it, second year I had it, third
year I had it. Out of there, started doing a
certain type of training, never had it again. And is
that a coincidence or not, I don't know, but I
never had a muscle injury again.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
Yeah, with those young guys getting hurt in training camp, Man,
it's one of those things where we have witnessed certain players,
certain young players that would have made the football team
if it wasn't for a hamstring or a calf or
you know, growing whatever the case may be. And like
Lavoss said, Man, that's one of the biggest things for
these young players, especially when they get the opportunity to
(11:34):
prove theyself and you know, you get a hamstring you're
out four or five to six weeks. The team doesn't
have time to you know, let your forgot allow you
to get healthy so they can evaluate you. And that's
the messed up part about training count. When these young
guys get hurt in practice.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Wow, that's that's a reality. And those are things you
got to look for. So when you hear these injury
lists and stuff like that, or you hear it like
after the first go around and guy's not there, might
not even be because of what they did on the field.
It could be something that they did off of it.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
You know, it's off the field, they drinking something, and
then you think you about to go camp? Is so easy?
Now they be in camp two weeks.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Bro.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
How long was y'all, Ricky training camp your first year?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Like six weeks?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Bro? Like five weeks minimum a month using camp two weeks.
It's just a different day in time, like this show
life going out drinking and not what you think gonna happen.
When you get a practice, you're gonna be dehydrated and
then your muscle's gonna pay the price for that. You're
gonna pay the price, yep, sitting at home. I'm better

than him, know you ain't. You know, that's what everybody
they be sitting at home. Man. I was in camp
with SO and so bro I was killing I'm way
better than Buddy Bro. No, you aren't. You're at home
and he's on TV. You're not better than him.

As I said, well, you've heard it here. That's inside.
That's insad stuff. That's the type stuff you just aren't
going to get everywhere else everybody. That's why we call

feeling disrespected over the fact that they allowed a player
to war his number five jersey and wasn't basically honoring him. Now,
there's only been one jersey retired in the history of

the school, and that's Billy Cannon from nineteen fifty nine.
Joe Burrow's name has been brought up and put into
the conversations, but number nine isn't retired either, but it
just hasn't been issued out. So Fellas, I don't know
if this is Is this a conversation where we make

the comparable of both both guys won of heisman, won
a national title? Didn't Joe Burrow win it all? Didn't
they win it all?

Yeah? But is there even like should there be a
comparable here? Both of them were transfers, so we can't say, oh, well,
he was homegrown there and ended up being what he
was one transfer. They both transferred from other schools to

little bit more time to think about it, I guess
where where does this come from?

Where where with the idea of focusing in on the
fact that a defensive player, or even if it was
an offensive player, that somebody's wearing the jersey, Where where
does that that come from? Like do you guys like
think you have an idea of what the origin of
why this would have upset him? I mean, it wasn't retired,

I would I would think if a jersey, if you
didn't do.

A I'm assuming Jane Daniels was told that his number
five jersey would not be worn because there's no way.

But that's that's an assumption, right because if they yeah,
the better way of doing it is Again, I think
it comes down to if somebody's not going to if
the jersey's not in circulation, it should be there should
be some type of a ceremony to say that the
jersey is out of circulation, like get you're retired, or
it's out of circulation like that. Should it should have
been officially done so it's understood.

This is the thing when you go to a school LSU, Alabama,
Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon. I ain't throw Penn State in there, Michigan, USC,
Are you not getting the top recruits every single year?

Every year you getting top recruits? These kids, won't they number?
I don't believe in college numbers should be retired because
there's just too many. You just can't do it. It
should be a badge and honor to wear a legendary
number like USC with number fifty five, like Penn State
with number eleven, or as you would say, Stick City.

So when when you're LSU, and like you said, only
Billy Cannon's number is retired, Joe Burrow's number looked like
it may be retired because nobody has worn number nine
since he's left. But I do believe if the right
recruit comes along, oh they get number nine.

And so don't you believe that that's why they keep
it from retirement.

I mean, if we're being honest, if you're going to
retire the number, this is the biggest issue here, right,
If you're going to retire the number, retire the number,
like if the number is not retired, then the numbers
should be I agree already. You're sending the clear message.
If the number is not retired, retired you are allowed

to wear the number.

If your son, your son's you two is a top
ten recruit in the country and he's worn a number
pretty much the entirety of his life, and a school's
recruiting and he can't wear that number. He not going
to that school. You and I both will.

We know that very conversations, multiple schools visit.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
He's not going to that school over a number. So
if you're a school, I'm not losing a kid I
feel can help our program in a major way over
a number.

I'm not so TJ. Do you believe that not not
one recruit has come to LSU and asked for the
number nine.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
You think that it's possible, but number Like, to me
when I look at it, number nine just isn't a
popular number. Like the kids won't I'm coaching football. They
don't want number nine, really, yeah, number they want like
number one, they want one, two, zero. A lot of
dudes do want number zero. They do. They want number zero,

But we had a multiple people want number two. I
mean number one, two, three, four, five, seven, eight, eleven, eighteen.
Those are the numbers that the young kids wanted more
than anything, And it's just me coaching this year. It
(19:34):
was like multiple people wanted those numbers, but only one
kid won a number nine.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
They resistant against six and nine and all's nine is
is not on its ass and six is on its ass.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Like it's so, I just said, Jake Daniels. Back to
Jake Daniels, Right, Okay, he has a right to feel
how he feels. He feels disrespected. You had that right too.
I wouldn't feel disrespected over a number because I know
DJ picking that I don't know him, well, I just
met him a few times. He's a top recruit. The

kid gonna be in the National Football League here very soon.
And that's just a relationship from two guys at a
premier school that no way you can repair that. You
see each other, what's up? But come on, we never cool? Now?

Well, well, I'm gonna disagree with you and say that
you said that no college numbers have be retired. But
I do agree with every Hosmital Trophy, that player that
wins the Hosband Trophy, their numbers should be retired. I really,
because when it's the highest honor of any college football player.

And I won't argue with you with that, but if
you're at a premier school, you're gonna start running out
of some numbers that these kids want. You're gonna lose kids.

How many Hogsman trollies are you gonna win at one school?

I mean when LSU won what two and ten years

take it and take advantage of the fact that the
number is still in rotation, that the number is still
going to be worn, instead of complaining about people wearing it,
create something like create a five legacy, like creator what's that.

in my estimation, not necessary at all. Build off of it, right,
because my whole thing is this. If you ask, Okay,
the career I had, would I have wanted my jersey retired?
And I would say absolutely not, because at the end

of the day what I did want. And again I
told the stories toward the story yesterday, my number wasn't
being worn by any defenders when I left, nobody wore
eleven on defense. Well, one kid did a safety ward,
a safety ward, and I didn't care he wore a number,

I didn't really care. I didn't start caring about the
legacy of the number until I gave it to Navarro.
When I gave the number to Navarro to wear, to
rebrand him and paint him in a different light, in
a positive way, and see him for who he is,
the player is, that was when the number started mattering

to me. But again, if the number is not retired,
you shouldn't be offended by anyone who wears number, even
if they're not a fan of you. What you should
do is build the number's brand as it applies to you.
That's it, like you don't have as long as LSU
is willing to support you in those endeavors, which speaks

to your point. TJ right, don't ruin the relationship, double
down on it, leverage it like people wear five, but
people will know that five is number that jayde and
Daniels made relevant at LSU. Otherwise, if it's retired, people
just forget about it. I'm sorry. Name the people that
have their numbers retired. I would say Archie Griffin might

be the only name. If if you said name dudes
numbers that you know are retired or the number isn't
in circulation, people forget about you after a couple of years.
Like bottom line is, I don't care how good you are.
People forget about you. So if your number is not
in circulation and it's retired, like I know, okay, it's
it's prominently displayed. If you go to USC you could

see the numbers that are retired, pictures all it's all
prominently displayed. People still forget about you, but you know what,
they don't forget the person who just did it. So
if you didn't know that Michael Parsons Ward Levin at
Penn State, I bet you a lot of people know
that Abdul Carter Ward at Penn State. It's like you
create the legacy. It creates a standard, and then it

carries itself. You don't have to a lot of people
that know mic oh or no, I do. Don't even
remember me, don't don't even know that I ever went
to Penn State, don't even know who I am, my existence.
But you know what, they know the number, They know
the number. So to me, I feel like for him
in this scenario, take a negative and turn it into
a positive. Have a conversation with the university, tell them

that your number matters to you, and that you you
would like to use it in this manner and in
this way, and go from there to enterprise it. Turn
this into an opportunity to make it into a business,
make those number fives matter, make the ones who wear it,
make them, make them know that this is a number
that is special to this university. So that's how I

think I would handle it. And it's not too late
for them to like kind of map this whole thing out.
I hope that they do, because he's a great player
for them and a great program.

biggest game? What was your plate? What's what's what's your

Oh? Man, For me, it always depending on what time
I was playing, but usually every night before the game
it was just fish rising potatoes.

Yeah. The night before the game, I wasn't pretty much.
If we go out to eat, you know, if we
go to a restaurant, then whatever, you know, I like
on the menu. It's really that that morning of when
it's a big game and you just constantly chewing and
you're like, damn, I can't even swallow. Like that's that anxiousness,

so I I stop eating before games. The morning of
I would just I would get too to go boxes
of fruit, and once a halftime came, you know that
all that anxiousness is gone, and so then i'd be hungry.
I just eat all the fruit at halftime.

Different, dude, bro I eat a steak and a baked potato.
At halftime, I took a steak and a baked potato.

For I got all pineapples, honey bow grapes, every fruit

we got a friend that always want to send us

eat little more are brisket if I could. I'm not
a good barbecue though, so you know I can't do
it myself.
