My first question for you, man is do you have
any sense of fomo watching these games? Like, Man, I
want to be out there, like, how are you feeling
watching all this excitement?
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Because the games have been incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
That the games have been unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
Man, And when you watch as a former athlete, when
you retire and you're you're watching these games or watching
the excitement. There's always a part of you that you
you reminisce about the good old days and when you
were out on the field and taking part in those
games and those atmosphere. And you know, the thing is
with sports, nobody outlives sports, right, And so for me,
(01:27):
if you're not going to be out in the field,
this is the next best thing of being able to
be in the stadiums calling games, doing pregame shows, postgame shows,
and talking about it. And so for me, it's it's
been amazing throughout this summer to be with Fox and working.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
On the other side of the ball, if you will.
So it's it's been great.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
It's wild because you're a young man in life, but
in soccer, in soccer, you know football terms.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Like yeah, man, he's an older guy.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Meanwhile, you're a young dude that just you know, watching
these young kids.
Speaker 6 (01:56):
Some of these kids are teenagers, twenty years old, it's wild. Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
I got to ask the success of Team USA, would
it have meant much more if they made it to
the final eight teams? I feel like so many people
were hyped up and you know, final sixteen that is impressive,
but getting to that.
Speaker 6 (02:14):
Eight would that have been a big step forward.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
It would have been a huge step forward.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
And you know, I think when you look at how
they played against Belgium in the game that obviously that
knocked them out of the tournament. It wasn't good enough
by any stretch of the imagination for US as fans,
but obviously for them.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
As players and as competitors.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Because they set the bar so high starting off the
tournament the way they did it against Paraguay against Australia.
They then go and make I think it was ten
changes for their third group game against Turkey A.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
And yes the result.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
Didn't go their way, but they were able to get
some valuable minutes for the guys that maybe didn't play
the first two games, and so they set the bar
so high for themselves, and they really had the nation
and all of their supporters and fans behind them, and
everyone was talking about the team, everyone was talking World Cup.
Everyone's talking Team USA, and then to go out the
way we did it was really disappointing in that sense,
(03:10):
and so I still believe it it was ultimately a
success of being able to galvanize the fan base, galvanize
the country and kind of help grow this sport.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
And the thing is, you know, four.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Years ago, eight years ago, twelve years ago, you know,
soccer has continuously gotten bigger and bigger over the years.
And now, when when something like the Belgium game happens
and we don't play well, we don't advance, we don't win,
everyone's talking about it. Everyone's got an opinion, and to
a certain extent, that's a good thing because they're holding
(03:46):
the players and the team accountable. More people are interested,
and so it's only going to continue to help grow
the sport.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Now, as a goalkeeper, does your heart go out to
Team USA when when like a moment that happens where
the goal goalkeeper kicks the ground and that little miskick
and that leads to the goal, is that does that
hurt even more because you feel like you've been in
those moments and know that stress.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Yeah, I mean I certainly have been in those moments.
I think all goalkeepers have been in those moments. And
the thing about those moments is how do you respond?
How do you bounce back? And so Matt Freez certainly
has a huge challenge ahead of him to mentally rebound,
but also, you know, from a physical standpoint and proving
his worth again. And you know the thing about professional sport,
(04:30):
and especially when you're representing your country, you're only as
good as your last game. And so the bar is now.
You know, everyone starts again fresh and it's a new cycle,
it's a new four year cycle, and you've got to
now go and prove yourself day in and day out
to try and earn that callback into the national team
and show.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
That you belong.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
But you deserve to be there, and you can only
do that with your performances for your club team. And
like I said, rebounding from something like that, it's it's
not always always the easiest.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Hey Brad, what was the play there? Like, how would
you have handled it?
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Yeah, I mean listen, I think when you're when you're
outside the eight yard box as a goalkeeper, as a
as a goalkeeper, alarm bell start going off inside of
your head, right, because that's an area that we're not
accustomed to being and so in that moment, you're you're
best putting your foot through in it, playing it even
into the sands, and just clearing the danger and be
done with the play. Unfortunately for him, he had a
(05:33):
you know, a half second hesitation and when that happens,
you put yourself in such a dark hole and and
ultimately we were punished for it.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
I wanna you know, ask you this too, Like in
retrospect we could say those things, But do you think
nerves are involved in that moment? Like what are the
feelings playing in the World Cup?
Speaker 6 (05:50):
I mean, yeah, you've been there, You've been there as
much as anyone.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
Yeah, I mean listen, when when you're like I said,
when you're outside of the box, it's it's you know,
you're the alarm bells are going, like I said. But
at the same time, you understand that this is a
massive opportunity.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
This is a massive game.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
For you as an individual, for the team collectively, and
ultimately for the country, And a lot of hopes and
dreams are are riding on your shoulders. And I'm not
saying in that moment you're thinking about all those different
things and those In that moment, you're relying on your
your training and your your you know what you've gone
through to get to the to that moment. But unfortunately
(06:29):
for him, and in that sense of the play, he
had one slight hesitation and that was that was all.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
She wrote, yeah, yeah, brat, let me ask you because, uh,
you know, like I said, you're a young man in life,
forty one years old, kid of the eighties and nineties.
When when you see kids now, I got two little kids.
I coach baseball. They they've played soccer, they've done it all.
Are kids playing too much with the travel and the
club or you think that's preparing them for Team USA
to one day be there? Like what what's your take
(06:57):
on kids sports and overdoing it versus hey being prepared
to face teams like Spain and Argentina.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Yeah, I mean, listen, I think every kid certainly has
their own pathway, right.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
I've got four young kids, Yeah, same thing.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
I'm coaching baseball, softball, flag football. I stay clear of soccer.
Apparently my son doesn't think I know anything about that,
so I stay away from soccer. But it's all the
other sports. And you know, I'm a big fan of
playing multi sports as a as a kid and being
able to kind of test yourself in different arenas, whether
(07:33):
it's a basketball court, baseball field, soccer field, and.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
So I'm all about it.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Now, there's certain individuals out there that are unbelievable and
you could tell from an early age, they have a
love and a desire for, you know, said one sport,
and you know, if that's what they want to go
down that pathway and they're enjoying it. I think that
that part is important as well. But at the same time,
kids just need to be able to be kids and
(08:01):
enjoy what they're doing, because I think in America we
have so many options that kids end up getting burnt out.
And what the last thing you want to see is
a kid reach fifteen, sixteen, seventeen saying, you know what,
I don't want to I don't want to chase this
any more. I don't I don't want to play sports.
It's become a job and it's no longer fun and
I'm not enjoying it. And then they lose that burning desire.
(08:23):
And so, yes, we have some kids that you know,
we'll we'll be able to do the one sport avenue. Uh,
there's other kids, you know, mine specifically, you know, they're
all about the multi sport and down the road if
all of a sudden they are able to represent their
country and play for the national team.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Happy days.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
We're here with Brad Gazan and it's a pleasure having
you here, do you think as we look for that
next pulistic you think that maybe we were too hard
on him, or expectations are too high, or the stars
of our team should be held accountable.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
So I saw Land Donovan, our.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Boy, Hercules go Man, a lot of people pretty bold
and honest about like man, it just wasn't a good performance.
Are we too hard on these young stars or do
you think that's just how it is?
Speaker 5 (09:13):
No, No, listen it they they will be the first
to admit that the performance wasn't good enough. And and
so you know they they know that when they look
back on that game against Belgium, they're gonna say, yeah,
we we weren't good enough as a collective, we weren't
good enough. Individually we weren't good enough. And that's why
I think it's so disappointing. And and these as the
(09:34):
criticism isn't anything that they're not you know, they're not
used to it. They whether they're playing in Europe, playing
with the national team, they understand that's that's part of it.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Yeah, But then you would look.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
In someone like Christian. Christian is net with the injury.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Do we give them a little more a great.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Exactly, Well, well I would, I would say this, right,
because okay, he comes off, and you know, we don't
I know the extent of the injury or I think
they said it was ultimately a brom bone bruise with
potential small for microfracture or.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Something like this.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
I don't know exactly the diagnosis, right, But I can
only take a player's word on if they can't continue
or not.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Now, you know, I.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
Played with broken bones, I played with broken faces, fingers,
all the things. But at the same time, if he's
saying that he couldn't continue, and all of a sudden
he needed to make a play, if he stayed out
on the field and needed to make a play and
couldn't make a play, then all of a sudden, the
conversation is flipped and we're saying, well, why didn't he
(10:40):
Why wasn't he professional enough and more experienced to say,
you know what, I couldn't continue and I needed to
come off the field. And so I can see it
both ways. You know, collectively, they weren't good enough. And
so you know, for me, I'm not gonna I'm not
gonna sit and just point the finger at Christian or
one guy there was a lot that went into that
game against Belgium, and as a whole, we weren't good

from start to finish.

Did you did you have a favorite player from from
another team this this tournament?
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Well, I mean I think, you know, being being forty
one years old, being a former goalkeeper. I don't know
if you guys followed, but Kate cape Verd and the
goalkeeper for for them, Yeah, Senior was absolutely unbelievable. And
he put in man of the match performance after performance
after performance, and and he stood on his head the

way he carried himself, the way.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
He continues to carry himself.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
You know, I love the fact that he's forty years
old and still doing the business on the world stage.
And listen, a lot of these players they wouldn't have
had the opportunity to be at this World Cup if
it wasn't for the expansion of the field in terms
of you know, just opening and opening up the tournament
to so many more teams. And so when you look
(12:20):
at a team like k Bird and their fan base
and how small of a country they are to then
go and do what they've done throughout the summer, it
was inspiring. And like I said, Vesena, I think his
Instagram followers went, how crazy was that? He's north of
like eighteen million at this point. He went in the
tournament with like forty thousand.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Yeah, he went fifty, like one hundred and fifty million,
like crazy.
Speaker 2 (12:42):

You know what's crazy is you watch when over time
no one scores. You know, you know, we're not guys
that know all the rules of different levels of soccer.
But I feel like as as a guy that will
casually watch nothing like the penalty, like the shootout at
the ends as a.

Goalkeeper, is the stress on you? Yeah? I say, is
the stress on you or the guys trying to make
the kid?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
And I do wonder Brad, how much of it is
just listen, I feel like an ass even asking.
Speaker 6 (13:17):
But how much of it is a guessing game versus
you knowing their tendencies? Like when you're watching, it's like,
oh shit, he dives this way, goes this way.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Like give us the breakdown of the guessing versus knowing,
Like what are we looking at?
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (13:33):
I mean listen, you're you're doing your homework, you're doing
your studying film and tape, and you can watch the
last twenty penalties of every player.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
You take down little.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
Notes maybe put down the water bottle or what have you, right,
and so a little cheat code. But at the same time,
players are so good at disguising, you know, the last
ten penalties, they go left and now all of a
sudden they see you lean a little bit, you know,
to your right, to their left, and they just they
switch it up at the last second. And so they
have the ability to do that.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
And as a goalkeeper, you know the side that you
decided to go to, you try to go.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
With everything you have so that if you end up
picking the right side, you give yourself half a chance
to then go and make the save right. And and
it's a huge psychology game and you know, the more
pressure as a goalkeeper you can put on the shooter
and the taker, the better it is. Because we saw
some world class players take penalties and miss penalties, and
not just miss penalties, miss penalties really badly and I'm
(14:29):
talking not even hit the target. And so you know,
we watched Messi he missed two penalties throughout throughout this tournament,
not necessarily in the shootout, but in regular time.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
And I mean it just speaks to the volumes of.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
You know, from the outside it looks so easy, but
when you're up there and all the pressures on you
as a taker, it could be a daunting task.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
I haven't heard the Slatin say that's like you don't
even remember those moments because you're just like out out
of your body almost.

But is that the most.

Badass a goalkeeper could feel when you block a kick?

I mean, listen, in that moment, you're you're twelve yards
away and listen that ball is yay big and the
goals massive, and then you come up with a huge
shave to help your team, whether it's a penalty in
regular time or extra time.

But then in a penalty shoot out out.

You're thinking, Okay, I've given my guys a chance to
go win this for US. As a goalkeepers, that's like
scoring a goal at the other end of the field.

S right, we know worldwide, he's more massive than all
of that. But is there any way you could have
It makes sense when you see him dropping dimes and
assists the way he's doing at this stage, Like what's
going through your mind when you see this?

Yeah, I mean listen, I've I've played against him a
few times and you know the thing is right, you know,
at some point he's he's going to get through and
and he's gonna come up with a big play. And
at that moment, as a goalkeeper, you need obviously try
and come up with a big save, but you need
the guys around you to.

Try and limit the the talent that he has.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
And I say that meaning you know, whether it's cutting
off a passing lane, whether it's forcing him one direction,
knowing you know what, I'm gonna give him this because
if I give him the other option, the other option
is a lot worse. And so you've got to try
and pick your poison, if you will. And he's so
good at at doing so many different things, whether it's picking.

We saw him just yesterday, you know, the unbelievable cross
with his weak foot.

A very rarely do those compilations pop up. It's it's
mainly the compilations of him scoring. So I've gotten the
better of him once or twice, but he's he certainly
takes the cake with with with more goals than my safe.

So yeah, when you compete against the best, man.

It's an honor, it's a privilege when you're in that moment,
you you you certainly show respect for for him as
an individual, as a player, but at the same time,
you want to test yourself against the best, and those
are the types of vironment you want to be in.

My first question for you, man is do you have
any sense of fomo watching these games? Like, Man, I
want to be out there, like, how are you feeling
watching all this excitement?
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Because the games have been incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
That the games have been unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
Man, And when you watch as a former athlete, when
you retire and you're you're watching these games or watching
the excitement. There's always a part of you that you
you reminisce about the good old days and when you
were out on the field and taking part in those
games and those atmosphere. And you know, the thing is
with sports, nobody outlives sports, right, And so for me,
(01:27):
if you're not going to be out in the field,
this is the next best thing of being able to
be in the stadiums calling games, doing pregame shows, postgame shows,
and talking about it. And so for me, it's it's
been amazing throughout this summer to be with Fox and working.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
On the other side of the ball, if you will.
So it's it's been great.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
It's wild because you're a young man in life, but
in soccer, in soccer, you know football terms.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Like yeah, man, he's an older guy.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Meanwhile, you're a young dude that just you know, watching
these young kids.
Speaker 6 (01:56):
Some of these kids are teenagers, twenty years old, it's wild. Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
I got to ask the success of Team USA, would
it have meant much more if they made it to
the final eight teams? I feel like so many people
were hyped up and you know, final sixteen that is impressive,
but getting to that.
Speaker 6 (02:14):
Eight would that have been a big step forward.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
It would have been a huge step forward.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
And you know, I think when you look at how
they played against Belgium in the game that obviously that
knocked them out of the tournament. It wasn't good enough
by any stretch of the imagination for US as fans,
but obviously for them.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
As players and as competitors.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Because they set the bar so high starting off the
tournament the way they did it against Paraguay against Australia.
They then go and make I think it was ten
changes for their third group game against Turkey A.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
And yes the result.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
Didn't go their way, but they were able to get
some valuable minutes for the guys that maybe didn't play
the first two games, and so they set the bar
so high for themselves, and they really had the nation
and all of their supporters and fans behind them, and
everyone was talking about the team, everyone was talking World Cup.
Everyone's talking Team USA, and then to go out the
way we did it was really disappointing in that sense,
(03:10):
and so I still believe it it was ultimately a
success of being able to galvanize the fan base, galvanize
the country and kind of help grow this sport.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
And the thing is, you know, four.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Years ago, eight years ago, twelve years ago, you know,
soccer has continuously gotten bigger and bigger over the years.
And now, when when something like the Belgium game happens
and we don't play well, we don't advance, we don't win,
everyone's talking about it. Everyone's got an opinion, and to
a certain extent, that's a good thing because they're holding
(03:46):
the players and the team accountable. More people are interested,
and so it's only going to continue to help grow
the sport.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Now, as a goalkeeper, does your heart go out to
Team USA when when like a moment that happens where
the goal goalkeeper kicks the ground and that little miskick
and that leads to the goal, is that does that
hurt even more because you feel like you've been in
those moments and know that stress.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Yeah, I mean I certainly have been in those moments.
I think all goalkeepers have been in those moments. And
the thing about those moments is how do you respond?
How do you bounce back? And so Matt Freez certainly
has a huge challenge ahead of him to mentally rebound,
but also, you know, from a physical standpoint and proving
his worth again. And you know the thing about professional sport,
(04:30):
and especially when you're representing your country, you're only as
good as your last game. And so the bar is now.
You know, everyone starts again fresh and it's a new cycle,
it's a new four year cycle, and you've got to
now go and prove yourself day in and day out
to try and earn that callback into the national team
and show.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
That you belong.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
But you deserve to be there, and you can only
do that with your performances for your club team. And
like I said, rebounding from something like that, it's it's
not always always the easiest.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Hey Brad, what was the play there? Like, how would
you have handled it?
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Yeah, I mean listen, I think when you're when you're
outside the eight yard box as a goalkeeper, as a
as a goalkeeper, alarm bell start going off inside of
your head, right, because that's an area that we're not
accustomed to being and so in that moment, you're you're
best putting your foot through in it, playing it even
into the sands, and just clearing the danger and be
done with the play. Unfortunately for him, he had a
(05:33):
you know, a half second hesitation and when that happens,
you put yourself in such a dark hole and and
ultimately we were punished for it.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
I wanna you know, ask you this too, Like in
retrospect we could say those things, But do you think
nerves are involved in that moment? Like what are the
feelings playing in the World Cup?
Speaker 6 (05:50):
I mean, yeah, you've been there, You've been there as
much as anyone.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
Yeah, I mean listen, when when you're like I said,
when you're outside of the box, it's it's you know,
you're the alarm bells are going, like I said. But
at the same time, you understand that this is a
massive opportunity.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
This is a massive game.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
For you as an individual, for the team collectively, and
ultimately for the country, And a lot of hopes and
dreams are are riding on your shoulders. And I'm not
saying in that moment you're thinking about all those different
things and those In that moment, you're relying on your
your training and your your you know what you've gone
through to get to the to that moment. But unfortunately
(06:29):
for him, and in that sense of the play, he
had one slight hesitation and that was that was all.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
She wrote, yeah, yeah, brat, let me ask you because, uh,
you know, like I said, you're a young man in life,
forty one years old, kid of the eighties and nineties.
When when you see kids now, I got two little kids.
I coach baseball. They they've played soccer, they've done it all.
Are kids playing too much with the travel and the
club or you think that's preparing them for Team USA
to one day be there? Like what what's your take
(06:57):
on kids sports and overdoing it versus hey being prepared
to face teams like Spain and Argentina.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Yeah, I mean, listen, I think every kid certainly has
their own pathway, right.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
I've got four young kids, Yeah, same thing.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
I'm coaching baseball, softball, flag football. I stay clear of soccer.
Apparently my son doesn't think I know anything about that,
so I stay away from soccer. But it's all the
other sports. And you know, I'm a big fan of
playing multi sports as a as a kid and being
able to kind of test yourself in different arenas, whether
(07:33):
it's a basketball court, baseball field, soccer field, and.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
So I'm all about it.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Now, there's certain individuals out there that are unbelievable and
you could tell from an early age, they have a
love and a desire for, you know, said one sport,
and you know, if that's what they want to go
down that pathway and they're enjoying it. I think that
that part is important as well. But at the same time,
kids just need to be able to be kids and
(08:01):
enjoy what they're doing, because I think in America we
have so many options that kids end up getting burnt out.
And what the last thing you want to see is
a kid reach fifteen, sixteen, seventeen saying, you know what,
I don't want to I don't want to chase this
any more. I don't I don't want to play sports.
It's become a job and it's no longer fun and
I'm not enjoying it. And then they lose that burning desire.
(08:23):
And so, yes, we have some kids that you know,
we'll we'll be able to do the one sport avenue. Uh,
there's other kids, you know, mine specifically, you know, they're
all about the multi sport and down the road if
all of a sudden they are able to represent their
country and play for the national team.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Happy days.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
We're here with Brad Gazan and it's a pleasure having
you here, do you think as we look for that
next pulistic you think that maybe we were too hard
on him, or expectations are too high, or the stars
of our team should be held accountable.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
So I saw Land Donovan, our.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Boy, Hercules go Man, a lot of people pretty bold
and honest about like man, it just wasn't a good performance.
Are we too hard on these young stars or do
you think that's just how it is?
Speaker 5 (09:13):
No, No, listen it they they will be the first
to admit that the performance wasn't good enough. And and
so you know they they know that when they look
back on that game against Belgium, they're gonna say, yeah,
we we weren't good enough as a collective, we weren't
good enough. Individually we weren't good enough. And that's why
I think it's so disappointing. And and these as the
(09:34):
criticism isn't anything that they're not you know, they're not
used to it. They whether they're playing in Europe, playing
with the national team, they understand that's that's part of it.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Yeah, But then you would look.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
In someone like Christian. Christian is net with the injury.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Do we give them a little more a great.
Speaker 5 (09:52):
Exactly, Well, well I would, I would say this, right,
because okay, he comes off, and you know, we don't
I know the extent of the injury or I think
they said it was ultimately a brom bone bruise with
potential small for microfracture or.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Something like this.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
I don't know exactly the diagnosis, right, But I can
only take a player's word on if they can't continue
or not.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Now, you know, I.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
Played with broken bones, I played with broken faces, fingers,
all the things. But at the same time, if he's
saying that he couldn't continue, and all of a sudden
he needed to make a play, if he stayed out
on the field and needed to make a play and
couldn't make a play, then all of a sudden, the
conversation is flipped and we're saying, well, why didn't he
(10:40):
Why wasn't he professional enough and more experienced to say,
you know what, I couldn't continue and I needed to
come off the field. And so I can see it
both ways. You know, collectively, they weren't good enough. And
so you know, for me, I'm not gonna I'm not
gonna sit and just point the finger at Christian or
one guy there was a lot that went into that
game against Belgium, and as a whole, we weren't good

from start to finish.

if you guys followed, but Kate cape Verd and the
goalkeeper for for them, Yeah, Senior was absolutely unbelievable. And
he put in man of the match performance after performance
after performance, and and he stood on his head the

way he carried himself, the way.

He continues to carry himself.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
You know, I love the fact that he's forty years
old and still doing the business on the world stage.
And listen, a lot of these players they wouldn't have
had the opportunity to be at this World Cup if
it wasn't for the expansion of the field in terms
of you know, just opening and opening up the tournament
to so many more teams. And so when you look
(12:20):
at a team like k Bird and their fan base
and how small of a country they are to then
go and do what they've done throughout the summer, it
was inspiring. And like I said, Vesena, I think his
Instagram followers went, how crazy was that? He's north of
like eighteen million at this point. He went in the
tournament with like forty thousand.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Yeah, he went fifty, like one hundred and fifty million,
like crazy.
Speaker 2 (12:42):

You know what's crazy is you watch when over time
no one scores. You know, you know, we're not guys
that know all the rules of different levels of soccer.
But I feel like as as a guy that will
casually watch nothing like the penalty, like the shootout at
the ends as a.

Goalkeeper, is the stress on you? Yeah? I say, is
the stress on you or the guys trying to make
the kid?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
And I do wonder Brad, how much of it is
just listen, I feel like an ass even asking.
Speaker 6 (13:17):
But how much of it is a guessing game versus
you knowing their tendencies? Like when you're watching, it's like,
oh shit, he dives this way, goes this way.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Like give us the breakdown of the guessing versus knowing,
Like what are we looking at?
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (13:33):
I mean listen, you're you're doing your homework, you're doing
your studying film and tape, and you can watch the
last twenty penalties of every player.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
You take down little.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
Notes maybe put down the water bottle or what have you, right,
and so a little cheat code. But at the same time,
players are so good at disguising, you know, the last
ten penalties, they go left and now all of a
sudden they see you lean a little bit, you know,
to your right, to their left, and they just they
switch it up at the last second. And so they
have the ability to do that.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
And as a goalkeeper, you know the side that you
decided to go to, you try to go.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
With everything you have so that if you end up
picking the right side, you give yourself half a chance
to then go and make the save right. And and
it's a huge psychology game and you know, the more
pressure as a goalkeeper you can put on the shooter
and the taker, the better it is. Because we saw
some world class players take penalties and miss penalties, and
not just miss penalties, miss penalties really badly and I'm
(14:29):
talking not even hit the target. And so you know,
we watched Messi he missed two penalties throughout throughout this tournament,
not necessarily in the shootout, but in regular time.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
And I mean it just speaks to the volumes of.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
You know, from the outside it looks so easy, but
when you're up there and all the pressures on you
as a taker, it could be a daunting task.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
I haven't heard the Slatin say that's like you don't
even remember those moments because you're just like out out
of your body almost.
Speaker 6 (14:57):
But is that the most.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Badass a goalkeeper could feel when you block a kick?

Is that the most bad as you feel?

Oh? Hell yeah.

I mean, listen, in that moment, you're you're twelve yards
away and listen that ball is yay big and the
goals massive, and then you come up with a huge
shave to help your team, whether it's a penalty in
regular time or extra time.

But then in a penalty shoot out out.

You're thinking, Okay, I've given my guys a chance to
go win this for US. As a goalkeepers, that's like
scoring a goal at the other end of the field.

few times and you know the thing is right, you know,
at some point he's he's going to get through and
and he's gonna come up with a big play. And
at that moment, as a goalkeeper, you need obviously try
and come up with a big save, but you need
the guys around you to.

Try and limit the the talent that he has.

And I say that meaning you know, whether it's cutting
off a passing lane, whether it's forcing him one direction,
knowing you know what, I'm gonna give him this because
if I give him the other option, the other option
is a lot worse. And so you've got to try
and pick your poison, if you will. And he's so
good at at doing so many different things, whether it's picking.

We saw him just yesterday, you know, the unbelievable cross
with his weak foot.

better of him once or twice, but he's he certainly
takes the cake with with with more goals than my safe.

So yeah, when you compete against the best, man.

It's an honor, it's a privilege when you're in that moment,
you you you certainly show respect for for him as
an individual, as a player, but at the same time,
you want to test yourself against the best, and those
are the types of vironment you want to be in.

to re repeat it, continue this this epic run that
they're on. But listen, Spain is on a I want
to say, it's a thirty seven game win streak at
this point going into the final, and that's by no coincidence.
And so when you play Spain, their ability to keep

the ball possession. I heard someone referred to it as
they're they're killing you with a thousand razor blades, and
it's just it's just constant pressure.

I don't know. I've I've picked the I picked England.
Speaker 5 (23:26):
I picked France. I was on the wrong side of
both of those. I'm excited for an unbelievable game. I
think it's gonna be close for sure. If I'm gonna
if I'm gonna go one way, I'm gonna say Spain,
I'm gonna say they're gonna run it back twenty ten,
the last time they won, and I think just the
idea of repeating it's gonna be too difficult for Argentina.
