(00:55):
coming off an awesome stretch of college football. Four straight
days are in the books. By the way, about an
hour and a half from now, we will get the
final game of week one, Boston College at Florida State.
So I was thinking of e Covino and Rich. They're
the best, okay. But one thing, one thing that they
do I think so well. They they they they bring

(01:17):
up fun, engaging conversations, bring everybody in.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
And this is what I want to do now.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I do want to bring an Eyowa Sam producer Shay
Nick as well, and this is what we're talking about
right now. By the way, I do want to open
up the phone lines as well for anybody who's interested
in chiming in one eight seven seven ninety nine on
Fox one eight seven seven nine nine six six three
six y nine, Shaye, make sure that the lines are
open there.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
We know a lot of you're driving around in the car.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
But I do want people's perspective on this is that
I think so when we talk like great stretches on
a sports calendar, there's a couple that always come to mind.
There's the opening week of March Madness. I'm obviously a
college hoops guy. I love it all to all games.
You know, you wake up games tip at noon Eastern,
they're on till midnight Eastern. You know, you're betting, you're

(02:06):
in pools, you're in Vegas.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
You're doing whatever.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
It's one of the best I think everybody loves this
opening stretch of NFL that we got coming up Thursday night. Obviously,
things kick off with the Ravens at the Chiefs. Worth
noting this year very rare Friday game on opening weekend
with the Eagles and Packers in Brazil, which obviously leads
into Sunday. Then we get the doubleheader on Monday night.

(02:30):
So when everyone talks about these great stretches on the
sports calendar, they always mention those. I don't think they
mentioned the current stretch that we are in right now though.
In college football, from the perspective of Thursday night it starts.
Always got a marquee game this year. I know that

(02:52):
Colorado isn't necessarily one of the best teams, but they
are certainly a marquee team of interest.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Goes right into Friday, wet all day.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Saturday, we had an LSU USC game where, if the
numbers that I'm seeing are correct, eleven million people were
watching last night beautiful and that was, by the way,
with a lot of people not even being able to
get it because a charter at every or not Charter
Direct TV and everything going on there. And by the way,
it closes tonight with Florida State. So I just bring
it up. I don't think this stretch of five days

(03:22):
gets enough credit. So what I want to ask the guys,
I want to ask you VJ. Give me a stretch
on the sports calendar, and I'm gonna make it broad.
So it could be a weekend, I got it. It could
be a three day stretch. I also want to say,
it could include the Olympics. It could include, you know,
a two to three week stretch as opposed to just
two or three days. What is the one for you
that you don't think it's enough credit on this sport.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Mine's a little long, though, mine's about three weeks. Mine's
about three weeks to about a month. But it's a
beautiful stretch. You guys are got a feeling. One is
hit me at about October twenty fifth to Thanksgiving. Okay, okay,
because by that time you have those college playoff polls
about to drop.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Right.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
College playoffs is about week nine, week eight. We know
what teams are. The NFL is in where we're middle
of the we're week seven, week eight, now, baby, we
we know who everybody pretty much is at this point,
and teams are teams are rolling. But then you also
have Major League Baseball either the NLCS or the ALCS
is wrapping up or the beginning of the World Series.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Then you have the.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
NBA and NHL starting because the NBA has been moved up.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
NHL always starts.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Late August, like late October, but the NBA moved up.
Now they're starting earlier. You got that now going so
then leading.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Into by the way, college hoops starts right exactly, That's
what I was gonna get.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
So if I push no, no, you're good. If I
pushed it all.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
The way to Thanksgiving, you got all the big rivalry
games in college football, all the early weeks in November.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
You're trying to job there, Joscelyn.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
As far as the college football playoff rankings go, you
have the game Michigan Ohio. You have Oregon Ors, the
Silvil War, you have the Apple cut Washington watching the state.
Then this guy gets all lathering up for college basketball
because you got Bermuda, you got Puerto Rico, you got
the Maui, you got all that early guy, you got

(05:14):
the Big Ten versus the SEC, coaches versus Cancer, you
got the Jimmy v This guy, this guy's lathering up
by that time that three three and a half weeks.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Get I mean, you guys can just give me the
trophy now on the winner of this topic. That's my
that period of sports. Nobody can beat that.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
It's a really good one, especially because like for people
like myself, I'm not a huge baseball guy, but October
baseball just hits different.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yeah, that's when you get to that point. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
And by the way, like and it's the same for
all those sports. If you're not a college football guy,
but everybody watches Michigan Ohio State. If you're not an
NBA guy, you're still tuning into Opening Night. Okay, somebody's
raising a trop a banner whatever, blah blah blah. So
that's a great stretch. Now we have to listen to
everybody else's options before we crowny the champion here Iowa, Sam,
do you have a stretch uh that that is especially

(06:04):
fun for you?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Mind similar to VJs. I would just say the duration
of the World Series and all the football that takes
place in that what ten to fourteen days however long?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
That is something on every night.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Yeah, and it's just great because it's the culmination of
Major League Baseball and you have the NFL and college
football going on. To me, like just that stretch, you know,
like late October into early November, that's pretty solid.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
I'm gonna take that one.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
By the way, if anybody wants to share yours one
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox one eight seven
seven nine nine six six three sixty nine, feel free
to call in producer Shay, who might might have to
actually answer the phone here, so I apologize if you do.
But Shay perked up. He said he had one right away,
So what do you got here, Shay.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
I A lot of people don't think about this either,
but the NBA Finals and the NHL Stanley Cup happened
at the same exact time, and it's literally a nineteen
days This past year, it was a nineteen days stretch
where you're literally having a finals game every other day,
so it's like fourteen games in nineteen days. It's better
than playoffs because it's literally the finals and there's not

(07:10):
much else going on during that time, so it's literally
like all I'm thinking about is finals, who's gonna win this,
Who's gonna win that? So for me, that definitely takes king.
But I do love the stretch that VJ and Sam
we're also talking about.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
That's a good one you picked though too, if you
push that one back a little earlier, baseball is just
starting also exactly. Yeah, baseball's kind of getting cooking at
that point also too.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yeah, I'll add on that one.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Touche is like, it's kind of what I just said
about Major League Baseball is if you're not a hockey fan,
and like in December, you have football, you have college football,
you have college basketball, you're not going to pay attention
to it. But it's like even this year, like I
had on those Stanley Cup Finals games because they were.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
A blast, Nick Cope, you got.

Speaker 6 (07:48):
Anything, Yeah, just to build off of yours, I kind
of have one and a half answers because I didn't
want to throw something else at you. But I like,
right now, I'm a tennis guy. So extending back bit
grab the US open into the start of college football
in the NFL. I just like the anticipation of the
start of the years. But I think we're gonna have

(08:08):
a new stretch. We haven't experienced it yet, but we're
gonna experience it for the first time. January ninth through
January thirteenth. You're gonna get your CFP semi finals on
the ninth and the tenth, and that goes into Super
wild Card weekend for the NFL. I think that is
gonna be a massive five days coming up.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
That's okay, that's ten million views plus per game. That's
ten million least. Let's oh at least at least, So.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
We gotta tell the families, Yeah, you're not seeing us.
So you said two straight days of college football playoffs,
even the three straight days.

Speaker 6 (08:42):
Yeah, you're gonna have a CFP semi final on Thursday,
another one on Friday.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
And the NFL has been doing this since X.

Speaker 6 (08:49):
The playoffs. You get games Saturday, Sunday, and then you'll
get the Monday night game as well. So you got
massive games five days in a row, college and NFL.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
And then Tuesday we'll get some big college basketball matchup.
Wednesday will get some big NBA ESPN matchup that'll go
right back into Thursday night college full.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Oh yeah, I'll give you a good one, Nick, that's
a good one.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
I'll give you a couple other events that I just
you know, kind of just on a calendar.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
One.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
I'm not a golf guy, but there are two things
that I always enjoy every other year, the Ryder Cup.
There's that weird like USA thing going on. Sometimes it's overseas,
so the hours are weird. It's different than any other
golf that you get. So that's like a three day
stretch once every two years. I also, I've talked to

(09:40):
Dan Buyer about this, who obviously is with Cavino and
Rich every day. There's something about the British I call
it the British Open. Okay, so do the kids call
it the Open Championship. I don't know when it became
it's the Open Championship. No, no, no, it's the British freaking Open, okay.
But there's something about that event. It starts super early.
We live on the West coast, so I mean even
if on the East Coast, it's on before you wake up.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
The weather's always weird. You know it's July. But they're
wearing the turtle necks in the long sleeves.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
But they'd never cancel it. That's the great part. It's
like you get a US Open where there's rain they
might have to or the Masters they might postpone. They
might postpone it for for the you know, they'll call
off the day and they'll start early the next day.
It's like British Open, they just play through anything. It's like,
you know, I don't even know. So those are a
couple other ones I was thinking of. I'll also say this, VJ,

(10:31):
I don't know where you stood this summer on the
Olympics because I was kind of one of those people.
I'll be honest, you know, the Olympics in twenty one.
I know it was a weird COVID thing and there
were no fans fans, but I was kind of like,
have the Olympics kind of run their course? Like, am
I gonna I watch sports all day every day? Do

(10:51):
I want to sit down for three weeks and watch
a bunch of athletes that I don't know in a
bunch of sports that I don't care about. I found
this year with the Olympics. Between Siman By, between Noah Lyles,
between some of the swipping stuff, yeah, Novacan, Tennis, Scheffler
and golf, obviously the NBA, the NBA guys and really

(11:12):
not just Team USA, but you know Serbia. I didn't
think I was going to enjoy the Olympics as much
as I did this summer.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
VIEE.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Oh, really, well, I'm a big no one. I'm a
huge Olympic. I can't wait till because the LA I
definitely would be out financial and be covering some things
or whatever I can get my hands on at that point.
But I got burnt out this year, and I normally don't,
but I did get burnt out because there were some
things underwhelming. The team USA was underwhelming for me. Yeah,

(11:41):
basketball was underwhelming. Yeah Yeah, the men's side was underwhelming
for me. Some of those games shouldn't even have been
that close, and it just showed that we could just
throw out the world's best players, our best players, that
we can beat the world. And that's something I've known
for about twenty five years of my life. But Shakurie
Richardson coming up short into one hundred, that was something
right there. And then she didn't even if you guys
remember she didn't even qualify for the two.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Wow. And then Noah Allows.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Losing in the two and then coming up with the
COVID you know thing, but was seeing at a party
partying with no mask on like two days later because
he so called retested himself. He was a guy that
was really irritating to me because anybody that's listened to me,
whether it's Martin VJ or anything I do on social
media or any radio TV I've been on. I love moxie,

(12:24):
I love attitude, I love personality. I just wanted to
be organic. Sure, And Noah Allows feels like a guy
that was kind of pulled to the side and say, hey,
track needs a.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
You know, a speaker, track needs a star. You should
be that you should be. And no Allows is from
where I'm from, seven o three, baby, Northern Virginia. He's
from the same area code I'm from. I know the
high school that man went to. So I put Katie
Lynd Decky too. She from seven oh three Virginia. Look
it up, Baby. But I thought no allowed that that
ran its course on me. Shakiri Richardson ran its course

(12:57):
on me. I watched everything, some of all the bowles.
Did I watch all the women's gymnastic stuff? If it
was on, I watched it. But I'm like you, Aaron,
it felt like it felt like the.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Changing of the guard this year because you talk about
like the tennis right, you talk about Nadal being old
and Andy Murray being old, like lebron b and O
Durant bing old.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Stuppino. It really felt like, wow, this seems like the
old Olympics. Ah see how I did instead of ah,
the old.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
Olympics, and for the first time in a long time,
it did run this course. By like day ten, I
was like, okay, I'm cool on all this. I didn't
even watch the four by one relays and I normally
wait for those, and that's normally kind of like the
last things.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
But I figured after I watched our four by four,
I watched out four by our four by four hundred
team get walk down by the Netherlands, I'm like, okay, yeah,
I'm I'm done with track and stuff.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
So I enjoyed watching it. But by like day ten Mark,
by day ten Aaron, I was yeah, I was done.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
I will add I know I just hyped up the Olympics,
but I was really into the women's gymnastics that I said.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
It was a great, great spectacle.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
And it was almost like once it was done, was
like kind of the wind came out of my sales. Now,
admittedly I went away towards like the final five six
days of the Olympics, and but you know, it's something
to me.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
It was, like.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
I said, I told my Saturday partner Jason Martin, like,
it's almost to me like Major League Baseball's like I
don't watch Major League Baseball, but sometimes if I'm just
doing stuff around the house, I'll have a game on it,
you know, because you and I are the same way
is we know we have this mic. So if it's
the NFL, we're locked in. If it's a big NBA game,
we're locked in. If it's a big college football game,
we're locked in. Baseball, the Olympics, you just kind of

(14:31):
have it on in the background, you know, you know,
you're it's not something that like I'm sitting there with
a notepad in pen making sure that I'm not missing
anything like I would be for a big like Sunday
night football game.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
And with the women's Olympics, it wasn't just Simone Bows.
The young lady from Brazil was amazing, Like she was amazing.
She beat Bowles in one of those individual events and
took the goal. Like it wasn't just Simone that that
competition was really in all the swimming, USA We're not
the book, We're not the big dogs no more.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
Australia, the Netherlands, name Italy, Leon Marshaw.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
Yeah from France. Yeah, he We're not the big dogs
no more. And I appreciate that. I'm USA. I served
in the military. My father was a drill sergeant Airborne
razer in fourteen Romeo. My mother was a colonel Pentagon.
But I do love seeing other countries put their best
guys out there and come challenging and take on America
and beat us some Sorry, it doesn't bother me. So
one thing I didn't watch I tried to get into.

(15:24):
I tried to get into diving. Dude, I'm done. I'm
out of it. I'm out of diving platform, the springboard stuff.
Those guys are smart. I'm trying to figure out if
those are really human beings.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
I could be mistake. They come from a lab. The
way they're built in the way to hit the water, Like,
come on.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
I I didn't notice diving until basically the swimming was done. Yes,
by that point, the gymnastics was done, and so because
of it, I was kind of like it was it. Yeah,
like we said it was like day sixteen that fell
or not. Maybe not they started diving.

Speaker 3 (15:53):
Earlier because diving got started as like yeah, no, no, man, dudes,
them dudes.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Are too little, like where they make this guy, yet he.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Doesn't make a splash when he goes into water, Like
if I just stick my hand in the swimming.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Pool, it gets a splash.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
By the way, one last thing I will say about
the Olympics. You said it coming to la in twenty
twenty eight.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
I can't wait. I'm so far.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
Like there was one night we had it out in
the studio here during my Saturday show and I started
googling venues. You know, they're gonna have the swimming at
Sofi Stadium, which is gonna be crazy. Yeah, because they
did the trials in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium, so
they're right.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
They did so they can put a pool man. That's amazing.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Yeah, I don't know how they go about building, Yeah,
how do we do that? But they're gonna have swimming
at Sofi Stadium, They're gonna have gymnastics at Crypto Arena,
They're gonna have basketball at the new one and in Inglewood. Okay,
so it's gonna be crazt.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
What's that called the Old Inuit or something, the Inuit Zone,
the Terror Dome or something like that, where the Clippers
are gonna be no, I'm super gas into it.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
I'm super gas. I'm super excited. I can't wait to
cover some of these events and where they're gonna have stuff.
I'm know they're gonna have stuff with the Colosseum, it's
gonna be. I wonder if we're opening ceremonies, are you
do we know that yet?

Speaker 1 (17:03):
So first I saw the Colisseum, but then somebody we
could google it really quick. But somebody Sofi told me Nick,
I'm here.

Speaker 6 (17:10):
Yeah, so far, so far is gonna do the opening ceremonies,
but then they have to get the pool ready, So
that's why the schedule is gonna be flipped. Track is
gonna be the first week, swimming is gonna be the
second week. Usually it's the other way around.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
So and they're putting track is so far no.

Speaker 6 (17:25):
No tracks at the Colisseum. They're gonna have to and
they're gonna have to build it up above the playing surface.
Since they renovated the coliseum, they brought the seats closer
in for football, so they're gonna have to build that's
between the swimming and then that elevated track. That's the
most work they're doing and getting these stadiums ready every otherwise,
everything else is ready to go.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
And I they have to clash there too, at the
Coliseum for NASCAR, so they bring in they could turn
that field around, they could do stuff with that field.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
I'm excited. I just I'm exed.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
I can't wait to grab that good credential man and
hit somebody these If I don't care what it is,
I'll go do dart throwing. I love they don't have
break dancing. Long as they don't have break dancing in
this one. I'm cool because that was clear. That was
clear there.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
I read that, but that was that was That was
an embarrassment to my culture.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
I come from that era. I was in a breaking group,
Cold Crush Gang. That's what we was called. Cold Crush Gang.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
By the way, one last note on the twenty twenty
eight LA Olympics. There is no venue that's quite right
for softball, So they're actually having softball in Oklahoma City.
I don't know who I gotta call. We gotta get
Chris Plank on the call of Olympics Softwall. Yes, they're
doing it in Oklahoma City because that's the biggest softball
venue we have in the country. So Nick, maybe do

(18:34):
you know anything about that, because obviously u c l
a out Dodger Stadium they can't.

Speaker 6 (18:38):
Use Well, they got a new baseball there. Yeah, yeah,
there's not a great So. Yeah, UCLA softball facility is older.
They can only accommodate little more than a thousand fans,
doesn't have great facilities around it.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Usc doesn't have a softball team.

Speaker 6 (18:51):
There's really not a lot of options interesting Ana where
the Angels play.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
They can't they can't turn that into a softball field.

Speaker 6 (19:00):
I don't got an answer for that.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
I'm just thinking out loud, you're you're you're putting swimming
in SOULFI.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Softball Insider has more to share on this, go ahead.

Speaker 5 (19:10):
Yeah, So Devin Park is gonna probably be the grounds
that they play on, and then that's gonna be in
Oklahoma City. It's headquarters and home of the USA Softball
Hall of Fame.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
So that's where they have the college that but that's
not where the Olympics are.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
The Olympics aren't in Los Angeles. Yeah, yeah, so it's
a little weird. So there's gonna be two.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
They did surfing in Tahiti this year. They can't They
could have done surfing on the Rhine River.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
But they did it in Tahiti. So yeah, but that.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Well they got didn't do it. We heard about that.
But this is ridiculous. I'm sorry to ran on this.
This is ridiculous that the the Olympics are here and
you're trying to drive Oklahoma. So that makes zero cit
there's cal state full of I'm just gonna start naming
surrounding cities until somebody goes, hey fix that.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
But what angels play? You can't turn that into a.

Speaker 1 (19:56):
Softball a stadium for this, like they can put a
little money into it.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
I just want Chrisplank. But for Yoklahoma City is that's bizarre.
It's only four years from now. I'm pretty sure you're
a temporary diamond. Yeah. Wow, that's bad. That's bad.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
I mean, if they could build a beach volleyball stadium
outside of the Eiffel Tower, they could build a softball stadium, solf.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
So that's not the only thing that's going to be
happening there. It's canoe slaloam. I don't know if I'm
saying that right. Yeah, that's also going to be in
in Oklahoma City.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
On the La River. What Yeah, dumb too.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
Yeah, they said that there was nothing in California that
can accommodate it.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
So they're going right up against the Pacific Ocean. Yeah, yeah,
right up against the Pacific Ocean.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
But there's no way we could do anything water in
Los Angeles because it's right next to the biggest ocean
on the planet.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Great awesome.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
Makes some water and makes some channels and then you know,

is in Oklahoma.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
I'm just thinking, you're telling me you're gonna put swimming
pools in so far, but you can't accommodate anything for softball.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Got it makes perfect sense to me.

Speaker 1 (21:20):

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Shay, you're on not listening to brother, Just so you know,
my feelings were.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
Hurt producer Shay our softball insider. Hey college football, Yes,
let's get back to it. So, by the way, VJ
and I were in for Doug Gottlieb as well talked
a lot of college football, had Bernie Fritto. If you
missed any of that, make sure to download the Doug
Gottlieb podcast. Also make sure to download the Covino and
Rich podcast after we get off air here.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
So, I wanted to ask.

Speaker 1 (22:58):
You huge college football guy like me, and you brought
up something interesting in our pre show prep the SEC
Florida gets boat raced by Miami at home, uh Texas
A and m loses to Notre Dame as a slight
favorite at home, and of course on Sunday night, LSU

(23:20):
loses to USC in Vegas.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Is the SEC over overrated? VJ Husky.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
I don't know if they overrated, but I know they
probably seem pretty pissed off because what's been to talk
the last year and a half, two years, right, is
that the SEC they weren't the big dogs anymore.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
It was the Big Ten. Right.

Speaker 3 (23:37):
The Big Ten has been dominating, with Ohio Michigan being
the only team in the college football playoff format. By
the way, to go to three straight college football playoffs
the only Big absolutely Michigan was the only team since
the college football player playoff format.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
To go to three straight. And obviously they own because
the fourteenth player.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
There, you go there. They would be the only team
to ever do it.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
That's kind of crazy if you think about where harball was,
couldn't get over the hump against Ohio State, couldn't get
to the playoff, and to finish with three straight, I mean,
that's kind of beencreact. And by the way, latt you
know whatever. I mean, they haven't lost a regular season
game in forever. But anyway, I didn't mean to cut
you off.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
You're front SEC.

Speaker 1 (24:16):
Continue with what you're saying.

Speaker 3 (24:17):
Remember two years ago two Big ten teams got in.
They lost the TCU and then Georgia beat Ohio State
on the missfield goed in. So people starting to look
around college football say, hey, the SEC. I've always been
this guy about the SEC where yeah it's top heavy.
You got one or you got two really dope teams
every year. And then don't try to sell me on Vanderbilt,
Kentucky and South Carolina and Tennessee has been a walking

(24:38):
door mat before Josh Hipel got there formerly of the
Oklahoma fame of his career when he played college football.
But there was this this underlining thing that you know,
they're so great. They're oh, you got Sabing, you got
smart and at one point you had less Miles or
you had Nick Saban, and that's really it. It's kind
of like a three team window. Auburn with Cam Newton

(24:59):
one year, Tennessee with t Martin one year, Peyton Mannon
could never even get to a national championship game. So
it felt like they felt a little disrespected. But then
you don't help yourself when you go out and your
opening weekend competition is Chattanooga, Western, Kentucky, Furman In Arkansas, Plying,
buff and Alabama, A and M. Those teams last year

(25:21):
were eight and five, eight and five, ten and three,
two and nine, and three and seven. Those teams gave
up sixty nine, sixty three, seventy six, seventy and seventy
three points. Mind you guys, here's a real killer stat
for you golf. That's the first time since nineteen thirty
nine that four or five teams from a conference have

(25:42):
scored sixty or more points each on an opening weekend.
How do you like that for your stats? Right there?

Speaker 2 (25:49):
I don't think that they're back.

Speaker 3 (25:52):
You don't help yourself by scheduling these doormats early. I
think we're in the era now, especially with the twelve
team playoffs. You can have a competition game early. Guys,
it's not gonna ruin your year.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
But Aaron, I remember a tweet you put out about
a month ago doing your prep about the SEC and
you trying to figure out why SEC teams in November?
Do you remember this tweet?

Speaker 1 (26:17):
Some of those I think what we talked about this
you and I did affair.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
But no, I mean we know.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
First of all, I don't have a problem with the
SEC scheduling the late out of conference game. Uh, people
don't get mad at it, but just do it yourself, Like,
why does it know? If if Ohio State's mad, instead
of being mad, just schedule.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
Because they get punished for the SEC don't. Well, but
that's my point though.

Speaker 1 (26:41):
If there, if you know that it is a strategic
advantage that is working in their favor, then just do
it yourself.

Speaker 3 (26:47):
But no, because everybody else would get punished for the SEC, doesn't.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
That's my beef with it. You can't have You can't
play Northwest Missouri State in November at home if you're
Alabama before the LSU game.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
If Michigan or Ohio State did that, they would be
punished for it. If USC played San jlls A State
in November, they would be punished for.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
That was my beef with the SEC.

Speaker 3 (27:12):
The SEC gets away with it, and the Great Steve
the Saga just saw walk through this hall.

Speaker 2 (27:16):
He agrees with me on this.

Speaker 3 (27:17):
We talked about the way the SEC schedules these cupcakes
in November, after after September tenth, September eleven, twelfth, where
FA bro it should only be Power five opponents from
that moment on. I understand the cupcakes early, but I
feel like now Aaron with the twelve team playoff, can
White come on dog? Let me I just read them again.

(27:39):
Chattanooga Western, Kentucky Furman. Let me be honest with you, guys.
I know nothing about that college, and I'm a college
football head. I can't name you an NFL player that's
ever kate from that school, Arkansas Pine Bluff. I think
I might know one guy from there, but they went
to A nine last year and gave up seventy points
Alabama A and M.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
I love my HBCUs. I'm attached to HBCUs. My daughters
are going to HBCUs. Seventy three points is what they
gave up this weekend to Aubus. Like, I mean, come on.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
Well, I mean, all I would say is listen, Oregon
played Idaho, Iowa played what Illinois State. Maryland played an
excellent opponent in Ukon, so we won't count them. Michigan
State played Florida Atlantic, Nebraska played UTEP. So you know
what I will say is I will be curious about
what the future of out of conference games is because

(28:24):
if you look at the SEC in the Big Ten,
there's so many good games in Like, people crushed Lincoln
Rally for one. You know, the report was that he
was trying to get out of the LSU game last night,
but also that he's trying to get out of the
Notre Dame rivalry. And I'm like, I do sort of
understand it from his perspective of you're gonna have Michigan
or you know, you're not gonna get every team every year.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
But I mean, look at the schedule this year.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
Nebraska's improved, Wisconsin's approved, you get Penn State at home,
you gotta go to Michigan House.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:52):
And by the way, people say us he caught a
break because they don't have Ohio State or Oregon this year.
And so I am curious about the future of big
out of conference games. The other thing too, that I'm
very interested in the SEC and the Big Ten. It
almost gives these these other conferences the benefit of playing
their teams, right. So you look at like Clemson playing

(29:15):
Miami Florida is a perfect example. And that might not
be because Florida just might stink, but it's like, why
are you giving Miami an opportunity to play a marquee
out of conference game that could help them when Florida's
already got enough games on their schedule. I'm just curious.
I hope it continues. I saw last night, by the way,
because I was making fun of LSU because they keep
losing these big openers. They actually open at Clemson next year,

(29:39):
So that's great. I'm glad that we're continuing it. I'm
just curious, if you know, as the Big Ten in
the SEC continue to get more power, they have enough
big games in conference. I don't know that USC does
have to play Notre Dame, that LSU does have to
play Clemson, et cetera.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
Things like that USC still has to play nor Danka's arrival.
You have to gotta keep, I hope. So yeah, you
gotta keep that, and even the whole thing with the
college realignment, with the conferences. Guys, listen, you can't get
rid of Michigan, Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Guess what.

Speaker 3 (30:07):
We just don't have to play for the little brown
jug in Minnesota no more. We've been scraping their ass
for the last thirty five years. It's okay, if we
don't play Indiana, let Indiana play some other teams. You
talk about sc doesn't get a break this year. People
talking about this break.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
Okay, but what about the year that they do have Washington,
they do have Ohios State, they do have Michigan, they
do have Oregon. Because those years are coming.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
If you look at iwill scheduled this year, I would
so called gets a little break because they don't play
some of the big boys, and when they do play them,
they gotta go I think Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (30:36):
If I'm not sure, Sam, I was at the Horseshoe
this year. Correct, they're at the Horseshoe.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
But they don't have Michigan, they don't have some of
the bigger school that happens when you have thirty seven
teams in a conference. So just get used to it, people,
But there's certain rivalry games that can't go away.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Isn't Oregon Oregon State early this year?

Speaker 7 (30:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (30:54):
Three, it's like Week three but that but fine, don't
take the game. I don't need it. Thanksgiving weekend. Sure,
I just still need to Civil War. I don't need
I don't care when you play it.

Speaker 3 (31:02):
But even Norder Dame in USC the Bush pushed that
wasn't like October when that game happened.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
But this year it's the last game of the year.
You can't take away. Robert Lincoln is my guy, but
he was wrong on that one. We will see.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Yeah, I don't know. I just I am curious by
the way. The SEC has got some more big out
of conference games coming up. Texas going to Michigan this
weekend starting that.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
Sleep and also Nebraska and Colorade Saturday. Man, it's gonna
be a good one.

Speaker 3 (31:32):
Saturday is gonna be a good one there.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
And that's it. And we talked about that with the
with the segall Oh you'll be there, go going to
town for for something and I'm just gonna go to
the game two for you, man, good for you. I
always like to see people go back home or go
to go see their squad. Go whenever, bro, when if
you can get there, man, go always go. Always go

(31:53):
see your team. Man.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
But when you when you even look at like I said,
week two and just some of these matchups that we
do have, this shakeup's gonna.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Start early, guys.

Speaker 3 (32:02):
If let me let me throw if I could propose
it to a quick question to you, Aaron, we got
a quick second cause we got to get no problem.

Speaker 2 (32:07):
How many laws do can you have to get into
the playoffs? What's the line? Is it two or three?
I think it's three?

Speaker 1 (32:12):
Really if there's about a right team, like like as
an example, I think if Texas loses to Michigan, okay,
Texabout if Michigan loses to Texas, Ohio State and let's
say USC is better than we think, but they beat Oregon,
they challenge themselves out of conference, beat Washington. Yeah, like
like I think Michigan will be rewarded or Texas if

(32:32):
they lose the game, or whoever, more than like an
old miss would be like I think nine to three
Michigan that played Texas out of conference as opposed to
ten and two Old miss that played nobody out of conference.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
You know what I mean? Like, but I think that's
in it.

Speaker 1 (32:44):
Those are the interesting conversations that we you know, we
can speculate on what the committee will do here in
August and September. We're not gonna find out until December
this year.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
So yeah, I think two.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
I just think a three lost team, even if it's Michigan,
I would just go, hey, listen, the championship rings still,
Shawn's brightly and this justin was and we and we
had to rebuild some things this year.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
Well, I think that's when you get into and that
is the one thing I will say, because we do
gotta get to Nick. But people are like, oh, you
know when we went to twelve, it's like, oh, well,
we'll still debate eleven verses twelve versus thirteen, And it's
like we will, though, we will, but it's like it's
not like nobody in that conversation is gonna be like, well,
I mean, you can't leave out Michigan. It's like, well
I just saw him loose to Ohio State last week.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
Or like you can't leave out old miss.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
Well, they didn't play anybody and they lost the two
best teams, so yeah, whatever, All right, it's is Covino
and Rich Cavino, rich out, Aaron Torres VJ Husky in
final time this afternoon, Let's toss it over to the
news desk, Nick Cope, What is trending?

Speaker 2 (33:40):
My friend?

Speaker 6 (33:41):
All right, let's get through some of these here real quick.
The Niners plays receiver Ricky Pearsall on the reserve non
football injury list as he recovers from a gunshot wound
he sustained in an attempted robbery on Saturday. He was
released from the hospital on Sunday, but he will now
miss at least the first four games of the season.
Viking receiver Jordan Addison back at practice, coming off in

(34:02):
ankle injury. Bengals receiver Jamar Chase to non practice today
as he continues to seek a long term deal. Coach
Zach Taylor said it's a day to day approach with
Chase finals In day, baseball, Brewers over the Cardinals nine
to three. Willia Domas homer for the fifth straight game,
matching a team record. Orioles Blitz a White Sox thirteen
to three. Baltimore now tied with the Yankees at the

(34:23):
top of the Al East. Guardians four to two winners
over the Royals. Cleveland's lead atop the Ales Central up
to four games, a couple of games in progress. Dodgers
on top of the Diamondbacks six to three. In the
eighth inning. Sho hey Otani has stolen three bases today,
give him forty six on the year to go with
forty four homers. The chase for fifty to fifty is

(34:43):
very much on. Also have the Reds leading the Astros
five to three in the seventh inning. At the US Open,
American Jess Pakula is through to the quarterfinals with a
straight set win. Ditto for twenty twenty one men's champion
Danil Medvedev as he also cruised into the final eight,
and Joey Chelse Nut set a new world record consuming
eighty three hont dogs in ten minutes as he defeated

(35:05):
to Caro Kobayashi on their Netflix duol guys back to you.

Speaker 1 (35:09):
Thank you very much, Nick Cope. This is the ah
not the odd couple of the odd couples up next.
I was just making sure that Chris and Rob are back.
I mean me and vjir a little bit of an
odd couple. We are in for Covino and Rich. We
are we'll come back. We'll wrap the show and then
we will hand it off to Chris and Rob. That's
all next.

Speaker 2 (35:25):
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
Welcome back, everybody. This is the Covino and Rich Show,
Coveno and Rich. They'll be back tomorrow. By the way,
I should mention odd couple. Baby, they're taking over for us
in eleven minutes from now. Chris Brussard, Rob Parker and
you know they got takes from the weekend. Weekend in
college football, and of course the look a head to

(36:01):
what will be a fun week end of NFL football
in the future. Real quick for Jay, We've done a
lot of college football. By the way, we did fill
in for the Doug Gottlieb Show. If you missed any
of that, make sure to download the podcast. Want to
ask you we got one game left on the college
football slite for week one. Yeah, I'm not gonna sit
here lies say it's the biggest one. But Boston College,
by the way, remember who do you remember who? Boston

(36:22):
College is head coaches?

Speaker 2 (36:24):
Uh, yes, they're head coaches.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
O'Brien, Bill O'Brien, Bill O'Brien, Bill O'Brien, former Patriot, former
guy on Obama staff.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
He Texas head state head coach, day head coach, head coach,
he's been around. Yeah, he was.

Speaker 1 (36:40):
For people who forget, he was set to be well,
he was in the NFL last year with the Patriots.

Speaker 2 (36:46):
That was a debacle.

Speaker 6 (36:47):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (36:47):
Then he was set to be the Ohio State head coach.
And then, of course Boston College's head coach, Jeff Halfley
left for the NFL, which, unrelated to anything, that was
the most overrated story ever. People were like, oh my god,
he left Boston College to be the Green Bay Packers
defensive coordinator. It's like, yeah, that's a better job. Boston
College is a terrible job. But anyway, Boston College plays
Florida State.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
You actually know the.

Speaker 1 (37:10):
OUI Lagan lay however you say it, I apologize for
butcherj O. So you covered him in high school. This
is his fifth year college football. Obviously goes out saying
Florida State, they have to win this game. Any thoughts
on this one coming up here in a half an
hour from now.

Speaker 3 (37:26):
I know they better win. I know DJ bitter get
his feet together. It's the same thing I saw as
a junior when he was in high school. He just
hasn't corrected. It just seems to be a guy that
just thinks that because he's six four six five forty
five two fifty, he can just throw with all upper
body quarterbacks starts at the feet and then it moves up.
So with that being said, they are loaded. Florida State's
got talent, they got weapons. But it's gonna come down,
like most teams in football, to the q B poosition,

(37:52):
and that's what's gonna come down to tonight. I think
O'Brien will have his defense up and ready to play.
It'll be a little on the games at Florida State.
It's down in Tallahouse. He a don't cam correct if
I'm not respecting, So we're down there. Dog Campbell will
get Chief Osceola to come out on renegade and hold
the spear in the air and throw it into the
ground and you'll get the fans doing the Toma Hawk chop.

Speaker 2 (38:13):
But I tell you this, you better not be the second.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
Team in the state of Florida to be real hype
and have a great hype pregame and do all that
hype stuff and then get your ass handed to you
by the end of the night. They gotta go get
this win. They start off oh and two. Think about it.
Think about it. We are eight months removed from people
including myself, saying that they got holds out of college
football playoff and going undefeated into starting oh and two.

(38:38):
Now they pulled all those players out of that game,
all those players pulled out of that game themselves, and
then they got their ass who they did like they
did by Georgia. This seems to almost be a hangover
from that. This is why you don't do that. This
is why you play your guys and you play it
out man, because it can't be a lasting effect. Give
me Florida State, though I'm gonna I'm gonna put my
faith into Chief Osiola to night. Give me Florida State

(39:00):
to help them pull this one off tonight and at
least get the one in one and then we'll talk
next week.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
Worth noting by the way they play next week against Memphis.
Memphis is Mike Norvel's former team, but they're also a
team that a lot of people think can be that
group of five representative in the college football playoff. So
schedule doesn't get easier. By the way, I know Clemson,
We've talked a lot about them, but they played Clemson
first week of October.

Speaker 2 (39:21):
SMU.

Speaker 1 (39:22):
You mentioned it's kind of like a dark horse ACC
contender earlier in the show. So and by the way,
they still got Miami of course on the schedule, Notre
Dame on the schedule. Like, listen, this team is SMU. Yeah,
that's what I'm saying. They're not going five and seven.
But you start to look at you look at how
they played last week, and then you look at the schedule,
it could go sideways in a hurs.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
Also, just real quick, if I read it twet Scotti,
ohscause this is on what we're talking about. He said
he doesn't want to hear the scheduling. When Oregon and
Michigan look average against nobody's state Oregon, Yeah, Michigan, I
don't know about average. You must not know about your
college football Fresno State last three years let me help
you out.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Ten wins, ten wins. That's a good program.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
And I thought Michigan went really vanilla this week because
they know they got Texas coming up. That's called that's
called gamesmanship in college football. Home boy, tell you what.

Speaker 1 (40:10):
Gotta thank the crew, Iowa, Sam on the Board, producer
Shay Our Softball insider getting us all sorts of good
song on nick Cope for my partner VJ Husky. VJ,
it was an absence work by appreciate you. Covino and
